Well the truth is, there is no REAL beef honestly, black people tend to generally get along. However, I am around Africans, and I generally dont hear much. On the other hand quite few African Americans (colonial descent) have issues with their own heritage and try to distance themselves from Africa, so an African person is a thing to poke fun at and ridicule, especially if they're dark-skinned. From Kunta Kinte' Jokes, to African booty scratcher, darkie, poor, flies, I've heard it all.
This being said, while I think the African American community, is more on the ignorant side of the spectrum when it comes to Africa, I think those who TRULY have an issue with Africa are in the definite minority.Too add, I would like to say that the things I've heard about African Americans from Africans, are the things all immigrants regardless of race say, mainly, " lazy." In my opinion, the African jokes are just an extension of the issues African Americans have with their own community. Goodhair/lightskinned vs Darkskinned added with some economic prowess of being American= this barely there beef. A lot of it boils down to looks as well These Nigerian American Girls are less likely to have a problem ![]() ![]() |

I have not met any Africans in real life that look down on African-Americans, maybe a couple of Nigerians over here who are in competition with black Americans for the women which is just haterade drinking, but no real looking down. They have no reason to look "down" on us.
---------- Post added 2012-06-05 at 23:19 ---------- They've culturally enriched Detroit to the point where entire neighborhoods are abandoned and crime is rampant. A great achievement on their part, but not quite Tesla material though. |

That's just an internet thing on race forums. In real life, most Africans are cool with Aframs. Africans do tend to get teased by some Aframs though because of thier accent, and foriegn demeanor. i have had conversations between a kenyan and some ethopians. The sentiment is the same. According to them aframs are lazy and waste the opportunities of america. An ethopian lady told me, " we werent conquered and enslaved like those weaker nations" |

LOL its definitely not just an internet-thing. really though, its more or less a non issue. and LOL at africans complaining about laziness. try telling an african about a deadline, they don't understand the meaning of the word. most africans i know have no sense of urgency with their work. it gets done when it gets done.not really laziness, just they have a laxed attitude towards working. |

Dude who really gives a damn? Seriously, those people don't represent all Kenyans and Ethiopians. I live in France, I see lots of Black French here of much more recently African descent and straight from Africa imitate Afram hiphop styles of dress and dances and listen to the same music in the clubs here, its not all hate. in general, immigrants from africa to the US are highly motivated people. From what ive seen of them out here in California, they seem to be getting well-earned respect as a community. as a group they seem to do much better on standardized tests. I think aframs have a lot to learn from them. |

I was shocked to see how Africans think of us when I started reading sentiments of Africans regarding Aframs. I don't get it. Africans have nothing to claim to show superiority towards us. |

In France there are some tensions between French Caribbeans and West Africans. Because we are from the french overseas and because the majority of French Caribbeans don't consider themselves african. |

Perceptions. I have a feeling that many Africans know the stereotype of African Americans, like any other people. So they probably see themselves as working harder than the average Afram to rebuild their global image. With the prevalence of "black/urban culture" and stereotypes like laziness and government aid, it's not hard to see how they form that idea.
I haven't had that problem, but I think that's because I overcome that with my knowledge. When I meet Africans, well, like I do with anyone from any culture, I use their culture as a conversation opener. Oh you're from Nigeria? Uhm...Are you Hausa, Fulani...I know there are different groups of people or tribes from, well, all over Africa? Their faces light up once they see that you're not like other Americans who perhaps have no clue about their culture. Last week I met a girl from East Africa. Before we even began talking I said..."So...I'm getting an...East African vibe". She said, "Yeah....I'm from Somali." And we began talking... But I don't think this is how most Africans have the opportunity to see Aframs. They probably see the stereotype, which, besides being globally detrimental, is also very opposite their own traditional mannerisms. |
