Default CALABAR, NIGERIA DESCENDANTS- CARABALI surname in Colombia/Ecuador
ON the Southern Pacific coast of 'Colombia' and Northern Pacific coast of Ecuador there's a surname of African origin, it is CARABALI. It is said to be a corruption/or re-saying of the city CALABAR in Nigeria. It is said that these Africans were brought from the port of Calabar and thus given the surname CARABALI. Even till this day when we see the surname CARABALI, a very SSA person is expected behind that surname. I will post pictures of different Carabalis.

Julian Carabali

Erika Julieth Carabali

Alberni CarabalĂ* Yesid Hernández

Julian Andres Carabali Pena

Hector Jhonny Carabali

Tito Torres Carabali

Mauricio Carabali

Jorge Carabali

Hamir Carabali

Hector Carabali

CAICEDO BEDER CARABALI JAIRO

Keila Carabali

Alexander Dominguez Carabali

Clemencia Carabali

MAIRA ALEJANDRA VASQUEZ CARABALI

Ivan Alexis Carabali Hurtado

Veronica Maria Gomez Carabali

Diego Luis Carabali

Elia Larrahondo Carabali- Mayor of Buenos Aires, Cauca

Leidy Patricia Vásquez CarabalĂ*

Other surname for these descendants may be Biafara, Biafra. Colombia and Ecuador are one of the few places with surviving African surnames, African Y-dna must be VERY high among afro colombians, specialy in towns with those surnames.

True, I'm trying to get the perspective of the Nigerians on this forum too to see what they think, if they can still be from Nigeria today.

Technically even though they are Carabli by surname they shuold have other African ethnic groups in the mixture, seems like the colombian pacific coast had alot of Togo/Benin/Nigerian influence, as well as Congolese/Angolan. I'd guess most of these people have all those mixtures, however they might sitll be pred. southeast nigerian (Carabli) MAYBE in DNATribes they will be most similar to Igbo which are part of the calabar ethnic groups brouht over as Carabali, if they had Efik's they should as well.

Yes, I believe that would be the case genetically but I would like one of the WA posters to say if they can be placed in Nigeria today or not, or do they look too African mixed with various ethnicities to just be one ethnicity phenotypically in SSA today.

This is cool MK! I have a 4th great grandmother whose last name was written as Ohenia/Ohene. We think it might be a form of the Akan Ohene or Ohenewaa, which apparently is a name connected to some sort of Chief.

Yep, wouldn't surprise me. Akans were brought to those British Caribbean colonies. I tell my woman all the time, that she's basically Nigerian and I ask her when she's going to visit her mother country

I think its very possible that they can be from Calabar, because people from Calabar are a mixture of different ethnic groups due to the towns history.
I gotta research more about the Calabar, all I know is they got some beautiful females over there. Next time I go to Nigeria I definately gotta check it out.

yes, they could be Nigerian , Anyday..

Most SSA can actually fit in one place or the other in Nigeria

Many Calabar port exit slaves, were also from places like Western Cameroon and even the lake Chad area. Some traveled thousands of miles, from their point of capture to their exit ports.

In most Caribbean English Creoles, Twi (Akan), Igbo, and Ashanti are the main substrate languages.

In French Antillean Creole, Kikongo and Kimbundu are the main substrate languages.
