Default Greater Chennai to be divided into three
Chennai Corporation adopted several important resolutions on Wednesday, including formation of three regions for effective administration. It also resolved to build infrastructure worth over Rs.7,000 crore in the next five years under Chennai mega city and integrated urban development missions.

Road development and stormwater drain construction would be given impetus, the resolution said. Sources said the expanded corporation covering 426 square km and comprising 42 adjacent local bodies would be divided into North Chennai, Central Chennai and South Chennai. Each region will be headed by an IAS officer. A senior IAS officer heading the corporation as its commissioner would control all three regional officers.

Besides, there will be zonal assistant commissioners to carry out routine civic jobs, the sources said, adding that solid waste management would be another prime area where the corporation would spend about Rs.150 crore.

The corporation also discussed a private firm to replace Delhi-based Neel Metal Fanalca to clear garbage in parts of Chennai.

The other important resolutions adopted were reclaiming custody and maintenance of Marina Beach from PWD, repairing 30 arterial roads and planting 2 lakh saplings. A corporation official said a lot of proposals to develop the suburbs were in the the suburbs pipeline.
