I think that picture is a great example of the difference between what is appropriate and what a forigner can get away with thru percieved ignorance. I'd take my ques from how the Thai people in the background of the photo are dressed personally.
I make an effort to dress nicely when traveling and I think it pays off in the positive reception I get from locals. |

If you want to visit the king's palace in BKK make sure you are dressed appropriately, no shorts, jeans etc, Guards at the entrance stop everybody who isn't. However, there is a place right there where you can rent a passin (sarong). I was surprised our Thai "niece" didn't know better and was turned away because of her jeans. Maybe it was the holes in it. During our Peace Corps training I was reprimanded by our ajarn (teacher) for wearing Birks without back straps when we went to the village elementary school for language training. Rules for women are stricter as pointed out by others here.
BTW: Thai culture is an important part of US Peace Corps training since volunteers are considered to represent our country. |

Why not pack light, and get clothing here? Despite what most people will tell you, clothing of all sizes is available. Thai people actually come in all sizes. You may not able to set any fashion trend, but you will find acceptable clothing in which you will feel comfortable - cheap too!
As far as internet recommendations go, I like to use this example: ![]() This is a photo of a girl who, in her blogs and forum entries, professes deep knowledge of Thai culture and sensibilities. I'm sure she would say shorts and strappy tops are fine! |

In most Thai eyes, the women isn't dressed to be out in Bangkok. Yes, one can wear this without incident, but it won't garner much respect.
Yes, one will see thais wearing shorts. Some will even wear spiffy hats! |

I personally like to see both male and female, dress and behave to show the utmost of respect for the Thai way. I believe you should follow their customs, embrace and enjoy what they concider correct. I know I have't answered you question's, there are many who can give you better direction than I. As for the young lady in the photo, I dont concider her to be dressed in an appropriate manner, to approach a monk. If that were my daughter, I would not be proud.

Yeah I don't think I'll be going to a temple in shorts and tank top anytime soon! I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable dressed like that in front of a monk. lol I just know that what's considered exposed in American is far different than what is considered exposed in Thailand. And I do want to be respectful and respected.
