While it's true that ·Ñ¡ÉÔ³ is derived from a Sanskrit word that can mean "right hand side" or "south", you will not hear the word used that way in regular speech. Most Thai names and nicknames have meanings, but those meanings aren't usually meant to be descriptive of the person. So don't read too much into that.

I have not seen the terms 'left', 'right', 'liberal', and 'conservative' used to describe Thai politics. I don't they fit very well (actually I don't think they are very useful for Western politics either, but that's another point altogether). Thai political parties tend to be described in terms of their leaders rather than in terms of policy issues. This "cult of personality" style of politics is, in my opinion, a major factor hindering the development of needed governmental reforms.

The "Thai Rak Thai"-Party is now forbidden in Thailand:

·Ñ¡ÉÔ³ = south ·ÔÈãµé

but Taksin was born in Northern Thailand in ChaingMai province.

Thaksin and TRT

I read somewhere that Taksin ·Ñ¡ÉÔ³ means "right hand side" . Is that trough? He founded the populist Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party, but on which side is that party? Left, right or liberal or conservative?
