Default How committed are you?
After two long years of being Kendo starved, I finally joined a club thats two hours away. So twice a week, I drive two hours there and two back. If that isn't a sign of my commitment than I don't know what is.

So my question is this, to what lengths have others (that means you) gone to practice Kendo, or other disciplines for that matter?

I drive about an hour to kendo, but its in LA traffic
I pass at least 10 dojo on my way over there, and there are about 4 dojo that are closer going the opposite direction from my house too.

I only used to travel 80km to the dojo and 80km back (Approx 50Miles) tuesday and thursday nights after work, then on Sunday morning to train from 9:30 till 12:30. That drive only takes around 1 - 1.5 hours.... The sunday morning was the killer. On the Tuesday and Thursday I'd take my stuff to work, jump in the car when I finished and drive.

Currently I carry or post my bogu ahead of me to other countries. Either it costs heaps, or I get stopped at airport security when xrays show a men in my hand luggage. I get some bizarre looks.... I then keep it safe and clean while I live in a tent for weeks (its WHITE - not easy).

I give up nights out with on the town while Im on holiday here so I can go to a training the next day. I missed out on going to a girls-only male strip club tonight. THATS committed!!!! LOL

Seriously though, I dont think I would have started kendo if I had to drive 2 hours to get there. Thats tough. Kudos to you.

Couple of hours each way (NYC traffic) although it is only about 76 miles each way. The timing has to be right also because there is a window where I can get free parking.
Twice a week.
Sometimes a third practice in New Jersey on Sunday morning and now perhaps the occasional Sunday evening just 10 minutes away.

I'm still recovering from radiation and chemo so I sleep almost the whole day after practice.

My dojo is about an 8 minute walk from my house.

Although walking there in the winter sometimes takes commitment.

Well, my commitment has to do with money, cos i loan money to buy my bogu and now I have to pay religiously during 2 years or so for it... but is soooo worth it!

Well, there was that time that I found out about an informal seminar in Chicago earlier this year. The thing is, I got the email at about 11 pm the previous night. But, I took that 2 hour drive there anyways the next morning and ended up having to drive back while there was freezing rain and high winds...at night.

Way to go people, props to everyone who's love of kendo vastly exceeds the troubles it may cause!

I used to travel 2 hours total on metro 5 days a week to practice. Now I'm a little more fortunate, only a 5 minite bike ride!
It's nice to hear how committed people are!

From work 10 mins to my dojo, from home 45-1hr and 1-2hrs to any others depending on traffic. Several times I left work to attend a special keiko with visiting 8th dan sensei at other dojos, probably not more than 30-35 miles away, only to arrive too late for anything. L.A. traffic can be harsh. But it's all worth it in my book.

I practiced in Germany for a year and didn’t speak an ounce of German. Of course there were some in the club that spoke English, but I insisted that they not try to explain things to me during class in English so as to keep the flow of the class going.

is this some kind of contest?
i moved away from all my chums and a good (though pay was crap) job on one side of the country back home to the other side of the country to train with tim (my original instrucor, and much better level than those at t'other place)
did any of that make sense?

oh and this weekend after finding out 10 minutes after last minute that i couldnt get a lift to a seminar in edinburgh, i forced my brother to give me a lift to the station, just in time for a train that cost me £36 single

hows that?
