BAe Hawks which equip British Red Arrows, may join Indian Air Force Surya Kiran Team in future. BAE spokesman Dean Tasker told a UK newspaper that the deal is in preliminaries and the bidding process involving a "request for proposal" is yet to begin. He said that the funding has been released by the Indian Government to purchase more Hawk aircraft for the display team, but BAe is yet to receive the order. Indian government will place the proposal to the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which is BAE's production partner in India. HAL will them place that proposal with BAE.
If the deal is secured, the nature of the contract would need to be thrashed out. If successful, manufacturing is likely to take place in India and a team at Brough supporting it. Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) currently flies Kiran Mark II trainer aircraft and was scheduled to be replaced by HAL built IJT-36 Sitara trainer. The project is behind schedule. |
