A few days back a newish Farang English teacher friend of mine came to see me cause of problems he was having with a dog!
He's already given me permission to start this thread at thailandqa.com and here is what he had to say (in my words) "Steve, i got a serious problem with this darned dog which lives in my soi. I live in a rented house with my wife (Thai) and we have a four year-old son together. Near the front of the soi lives this old woman who owns about 20 scruff looking dogs. She has one dog which she let's loose all time which causes the trouble. All it does is bark and try to bite whoever passes by. It gave me a nasty bite in the ankle once and i had to go for Rabies shots" I explained to him that you’re allowed (according to Thai law) to ask for damages. He went on to say that “I went to see the old woman after her dog had bit me but she said ‘I was the one to blame as I had teased her dog’” He said his main worry was his four year old son. “The animal has even attacked my son and bit him before (no blood)”. He further said that he has to carry a huge stick every time he goes to the mini-mart at the front of his soi to protect both himself and his son! He was so serious about asking for my advice that last night I asked a police buddie of mine out for a few bevvies to ask him on what to do. I told him the story and he said “The police can’t do anything. Your best bet is to go to 7-11, buy some rat poison, dip it in meat, and let the dog eat it – just the kill the thing!” I called my friend up with words of wisdom of Thailand’s finest and he told me “I I don’t have the heart to do such a thing” Anyway, animal lovers know that poisoning is an awful way to die. No, what would you do? Kill the dog to protect both you and your son or just let the thing go about it's daily business of biting people so as not to create any bad kharma!?? Thailand has no laws about ‘putting a dog down’ for attacking people and the old owner sounds like she doesn’t give a darned! |

Go to the farm/garden supply where they sell the weed killers and those type chemicals,, get a small jar of LINNET, then get a Weiner, one of the Thai sausages that they cut in chunks and broil is fine,,use a 2 inch piece of the sausage, in the center cut a small slit half way thru the thing, then put in [very carefully] a small spoon, like the one you get with mashed potatoes at KFC is good, of the LINNET, a blue powder and close the sausage as best you can, drop it in front of the dog and your worries are over.
Used to be a lot of dogs, everynite would scatter my garbage all over the soi and I have to pick it up,,not anymore tho. If you drop a couple of those sausages in the soi every nite,,won't be long til you will not be bothered with unwanted dogs. Plus be doing them a favor as far as I can see,, walking mange mats, the police did that in mexico when ever an area was overridden with street dogs, put it out at nite and the next morning come with a couple of guys in a pick up and gather the dead ones up.. Now remember you asked, and I gave you a way that works.. |

I can't offer you any ideas of my own, but check this thread: http://www.thailandqa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9757
(scroll down a bit) It seems like 'billk' is working with stray dogs. Maybe he can give you tips? If I were you I wouldn't move just because of the dog. After all, there are stray dogs (almost) everywhere in Thailand... ![]() |

even if the dog is killed, the owner might figure out and take revenge? if it's just a rented house, and it seems so hopeless, I would rather move..... dogs can even kill such small kids. ![]() I'd probably kill the dog. Only because the dog is a threat to the neighborhood, family, and myself! If it was a matter of karma, most shop owners would consider themselves as helping the dog to the next life. I think Steve mentioned that the owner really doesn't care about this dog. Most people don't seem to mind when dogs die in sois, or klongs for that matter. Poisoning does seem like a pretty crude way of killing it. Any other ideas? |

I do know that the 2 dogs that were in my garbage and 1 of them also barked all nite, were laying in my bro in laws yard the next morning just as if asleep, so can't be to bad.
They were his dogs and 1 was a rott. the other just a soi Thai dog. And most Thai do not think much of or about their dogs, don't seem to be the attachment that us farangs get for an animal, never really care for them, will not spend to much money on them or pay any attention to them. I have taken 4 bitches to the vets and had them spayed and brought them back and turned them loose. no one seems to care, But if one dies along side the street then it lays there for awhile til the stink gets someone to haul it off. And I got tired of paying for meds. to bathe dogs that were hairless and about bleeding with mange. Nope wouldn't bother me at all to fix some more weiners for the dogs when they need em, more humane that the way they live. The way I found out about the linnet was a girl student of my wifes, whose boyfriend left her and she ate a big bunch of it. Don't think they read Dear Abby over here. |

Plus, the only Thai family member I have to support is the wifes dog who we had to leave with a good friend of hers in Bangkok. The dog is 17, which is pretty remarkable in itself, and regular gets post cards from the wife. And in answer to the question posed at the start of the thread, your friends first duty is to his child. So goodbye dog. |

I have spent a sum of money for medicated dog wash from the vets and given different dogs a bath here myself, mange is always a problem in hot climates, and seems that not to many people care, I even take care of in law family members dogs when they get to bad,, but it is me doing it,,not the Thai owners of the dogs.
But my Thai dog has never had mange, she eats good, and is healthy and a healthy dog gets it less often or severe, I have been feeding a couple of extra dogs that have shown a great improvement in skin health since they have been eating well, I hate to see a nice dog in bad shape, but if the dog is not nice, then it is time for them to go. and you are so right about that one dog, if a dog becomes a problem here, it is goodbye dog. |

Engine Antifreeze/Coolant is quite potent and a common thing people have been known to do when the owner and the law will not compromise. It is extremely potent. I have heard that only a single teaspoon will kill a cat within 24 hours. The most interesting thing about the method is that antifreeze has a density that is thicker and has a sweet taste to it, so once they lick it they like it, like a syrup.
I think basically is shuts down the liver, not sure how humane it is. I don't know if it is a painful thing. I only know what I have read about it on the public warnings that are state issued certain times of year. Here is one example of these warnings: http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/petcolumns/s...cle.cfm?id=146 |

I don't think so IGNT, I had a Bull Terrier that look like SPUDS, He drank some that a guy had drained out of a truck and it was running around on the ground and suds drank some, took him a week to die from liver damage and sure wasn't a pretty site to see.
And it would be hard to prove she owns the dog to prove charges that her dog bit you, be hard for her to prove it was you that dropped that weiner in the alley at night. Betti, I rented an Apt. from a farang out towards San Sai not to far past where you cross the super hyway goin to San Sai and rode the Green song teau. there was a recycler guy lived down at the end of the street we were on that had about 40 yapping, fighting, barking all nite dogs, plus everyone else in the area owned dogs that ran and barked all nite. If a Thai gets a european breed of a mutt they spoil it to death [really] sometimes, but do pay attention to them, bring em into eating areas and put em on the meat counter in the store or on the tables in food courts, will not even let the mutt get its feet dirty walking where someone else has walked,Pobly not letting it do it's own butt licking,,acting a damn fool before god and everyone else with that damn worthless, silly looking mutt and good Thai dogs have to fend for themselves living in the soi. |

Get a broom stick, tape, 8 D size torch batteries together in a row to the broom stick, solder an insolated wire to each end to the battery pack, and add a pulsating switch in between, connect these two to wires to the + and - of an electrical coil from out of an old car, these coils dish out 25 thousand volts to the spark plugs of a car normally, but because of the low amperage will not kill the dog, then stick two metal prongs to the discharge out lets of the coil , and bend these ends, so as to become with in a centimeter apart. Every time you see the dog walk up to it and give it a zap of 25 thousand volts using the coil prongs, at the end of the broom stick, you will find the dog will learn to avoid you in fear of being zapped.

I have a number of stray dogs around my place - at least 7 of them at all times. And they are real cool. They do bark and sometimes chase bikes, but nothing too much. A bite or two once in a while, is not enough for me to put them to death.
I do think the dogs do take note of people's behaviour. If you you respect they do return it. And if one odd one does act funny a good stare is enough to tell them their place. I think the trick is a stare and look away. And then stare again as soon as the dog tries to act funny. And then look away again. At least it works here with the dogs in my place... But of course if we intimidate them in a big way (sticks, stones etc...) we have a long-term enemy on hand. |
