I understand what you are going through. Alot of us do this is different areas. You get overwhelmed. You have to tell yourself, "I can't help everyone." You have to say it over and over. You have to think of those you have helped. You have to try and limit yourself. This is very hard. But if you don't you might get to the point I have. Throwing your hands up, while having a breakdown and just stopping. Getting almost angry at those you have been trying to help even though they never asked for it.
You have to take comfort in doing what you can. But knowing "you can't save the world" so to speak. Hope this helps. |

I do not live in a city but out in the country among the people, we have no tourist here, most of the people up at the school have limited contact with the outside, no phones or internet, no work for wages and many live actually in the forest, and the school doesn't have a phone either. http://www.thailandqa.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=22 |

There are a lot of schools like FARANGINPHET described many people don't know about them because they are out and really remote from public. The roads to their places usually dirt roads with potholes big enough to get stuck there for day.
I used to sponsor five of the orphans from Ganjanaburi till now they all grow up some graduated from high school. You might go to municipal education office ask them for help I know GOV. do have lunch program including milk supply to the schools. For the mean time to make your money go further when you go to BKK. pick some used clothes shoes from Jatuchuck swap meet I am sure the kids don't mind. Or better yet when you are in BKK. you go to my relative store at BOE BAY it is the whole sale open air market pick up all new clothes up to 7500 baht. If you are interested give me the fax number I will send you the letter of authorization and her phone number |

I agree with Paul in a way.
Of course we should help those with less than us, if we can and just do it. But we should not load it ( express to them) with our sympathies across, without being quite part of or responsible for their lives. The people I would really like to offer my sympathies and immediate support are those who are lonely, cold, estranged, homeless, without food. They are across the line. Else poor is just a level as long they are not being held there. So, I think. |

Take heart, we can make a difference.
------------------------------------------------ The Starfish Story -Anon As the old man walked the beach at dawn, he noticed a boy ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them back into the sea. Finally catching up with the boy, he asked why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun. "But the beach goes on for miles and there are a million starfish," said the old man. "How can your effort make a difference?" The boy looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it safely into the waves "It makes a difference to this one," he said. |

I do not agree with anything Paul says, he is a troll, and that joke about the shoes, I heard that when I was a kid 60 years ago, plus check his context and spelling and then tell me that he is an educated man raised in an English speaking environment instead of an ESL person, altho he might be Abo. But then I only have 8 years of formal edu. myself.
![]() But I will continue to do what I can for the poor children that I encounter here in my daily life. I hate to see children that have no cloths, do not have enough food or the basics of a normal healthy life. I do not take hear say to serious, but I do get around and I do see things and understand them, I do not live in a city but out in the country among the people, we have no tourist here, most of the people up at the school have limited contact with the outside, no phones or internet, no work for wages and many live actually in the forest, and the school doesn't have a phone either. ![]() My wife works on the computer at home every nite for hours, downloads to her handy drive and Cd's and takes her info to school and downloads to the computers there. last year we bought and gave to the school, 100 English study books as their books are limited. |

Some folks in the States sent money to help the kids for a couple of years, but for some reason it was not done this year.
The kids up there at 3500 feet elev. need shoes, socks and coats because it is quite often frosty and is real cold when you have no coats or heavy cloths. There are some pix in the fotki site of the give aways, my ISP [512/256] ADSL is so slow I can't open the site now for a couple of weeks, takes 5 min to open this one and 10 min more to post. |

What to do? I do what I can when I can, but it gets the best of me sometimes.
I have bought shoes, socks and coats for the poor students at my wife school and have contributed food to the lunch program when the school was short of funds, I have tried to help my wife teach conversational english but there is just so much that I can do there because Thai students are not taught to read and sound the english words or letters. Now tonite we went to the wednesday WAT market and she bought a pair of brown sneakers like the boy scouts wear and a jacket, when asked why she said that a very good student came to school with 2 laces across his foot and thru the sneaker sole to hold his shoe on as the top was wore out and gone and his jacket is just a dirty rag, When told to bring the boy home with her she said that he has to care for his mother and father and they live in a field house at the field, [some of you know what a field house is], he does not smell to good as he only has water to wash in and no soap or shampoo. He is a very good student and never misses a day at school and gets good grades, I know that there are many like that, but it breaks my heart that I can't help them all. |

Yes, well it is no crime to be poor.
Ironically this reminds me of a story my father told me. He lived in a poor country town in Australia, but his father could afford to buy school shoes for him, Ironically most of the kids in the school had know shoes, as they were to poor, well my father was so embarrassed having to wear shoes to school, he used to take them off when he left home, and hid the shoes in the bushes, until he picked these shoes up on the way home again. I personally think shoes are irrelevant to learning, but the opportunity of a basic education is important, so the availability of text books and teachers are of vital importance to the poor people of Thailand. About helping, well it is an impossibility to help every one, all you can do is to prioritize, and help what is important to you. |

This school 'FaranginPetch' mentions, does seem pretty 'outta -order!'
As for having a student whos family doesn't even have the money for soap or shampoo! Personally, i have never heard of such poverty during all my years in Thailand. Please post immediately the name of the government school you have talked about and im sure that us folks here will be putting together a fund in no time at all. |
