The Tamil Nadu chief minister revealed that the state is in dire financial straits. In the course of an interview to a television channel, Ms Jayalalithaa said that she had requested the Prime Minister for funds to the tune of Rs.2.52 lakh crores to get the state out of debt and for various welfare measures she has spelt out.
While mentioning the huge sum of Rs.252 billion she asked the Prime Minister for when she met him in New Delhi recently when she also handed over a printed memorandum of demands, she also revealed that the state is in the red to the tune of Rs.1,00,000 crores of market borrowings by way of bonds, etc. Elaborating further on the financial state of Tamil Nadu, Ms Jayalalithaa also said that the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is in debt to the tune of Rs.45,000 crore. “The DMK government had thrown the state into debt. We are in the process of reviewing department by department and there is a deficit in almost every department“, she said. Ms Jayalalithaa also stressed that as the chief minister it was her duty to get the best possible deal for the state from the Centre. “I am the CM. It is my bounden duty to get the best deal for the people of Tamil Nadu who have placed such faith in me. I must get my people out of debt“, she said while reminding the interviewer that she has been in power for just over a month now.
