Can anyone with a moderate knowledge of international affairs explain the Israel/Palestine conflict?

If there is a war, or some clash, between the two forces---how will this affect an international scale?I mean, would Russia or America or any African nations back either of the opposing factions(Israel/Palestine)Could this escalate into something greater? Can anyone with a moderate knowledge of International Politics explain this?
