I used to live on Long Island, and I'm fairly familiar with Adelphi U. It's got a pretty good reputation, although that was several years ago, but I don't believe it's changed too much since then. of course, Hofstra U. is much better, but I'm an alumnus, so I have to say that. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif

On the question of cost of living... well.... Long Island is a bit more expensive than your average place in America. Adelphi U. is in Nassau county, which is practically in New York City, so food and gas costs are a bit higher than usual (but not insurmountably so). I'm assuming that you will be a resident student in campus housing (or I hope so, anyways). The price of housing is... what's the word I'm looking for... ludicrous. Traffic's another issue as well, although that's not much of a problem if you stay on campus most of the time or you use public transportation.

Out of curiosity, what are you majoring in at Adelphi? And why did you pick Adelphi in particular?

Has anyone heard if Adelphi University is good, has it got a good reputation?, also what are the living cost of a student in America?, because even though only doing my A Levels, i need to think about University and which one etc

Im hopefully majoring in Asian Studies, i heard from a friend i known in America thayt Adelphi was a good university, but really all i want to do is study in Japanese History, and in England i havn't found anywhere that does, so i checked Kyoto and Tokyo Uni's, you have to be very good at Japanese reading and writing as all classes will be taught in Japanese, so i remember watching a documentary on Samurai, and one guy who was interviewed was a Professor in Japanese History who got hos Degree in America, so i thought America might be a good place to look for a Degree for Japanese History.

I know my answer is long winded sorry about that.

If it's Japanese history you want, and I'm assuming you want to study Japanese as a language too, then Middlebury College is where you want to go. They've got a great langauge and foreign studies program and that's the college where the US State Department recruits for the Foreign Service because of their language program. My uncle works for the State Department so that's where I got that info.

If you go to the Princeton Review website you'll find some usefull info. For the full information you'll have to register and I'm pretty sure it's free. Another good guide to reference is the Fisk Guide to Colleges, which I used and found more usefull than the Princeton Review. If you have a guidance counselor of sorts then speak with them. It all depends on what you want to study, where you want to be, what kind of school you want, etc. Use those two guides and if you can, visit them. Reading about a place and actually being there are two completely different things. If you ask someone at a particular university/college if they like it there, chances are they're going to have some sort of biased opinion. Take a look at the two guides mentioned above. You will probably have to email the admissions office about requirements for international students. Hope this helps.

We have an excellent history course at Oxford. Cambridge isn't so shabby either... I also know a guy from Harvard who did their Japanese course, nice guy and he knew his stuff. Forget about studying seriously in Japan until you've got your ikkyu (and I don't mean kendo...).
