Many thanks for the helpful response. 30 year old dojo in Sydney with its own resident nanadan! That sounds great. I will definitely visit you guys when I get down there. (I take it Pyrmont and Hornsby is very far from the inner suburbs?)

What would the "inner suburbs" mean exactly? Is the North Shore (i.e. Crows Nest, Artamon, Neutral Bay, Willoughby) part of the inner suburbs and how long does it take to get into the City from North Shore?
I did not train with the Queensland crowd because, until I stumbled onto Kendo World, I had no idea there were kendo dojos in Queensland. Although I did run across a Hae Dong Kumdo dojo while driving past Sunnybank once. I did kendo in the US when I was really young, but picked it up again after I started working in Taiwan.

Moving to Sydney
 

Hi to all Sydney people,

I might be moving to Sydney in the middle of next year, and am hoping the Sydney dwellers could give me some advice on which areas to live in which would give me good access to the City as well as some Kendo dojos.

I currently train 4 times a week and would hope to keep up the same in Sydney if possible. I know that UNSW hosts kendo clubs, but being a former Queenslander (now living in Taiwan) I have no idea how far Albury/Wollogong/Macquarie is from Sydney City.

Well guys, it's finally a done deal and official.

Offers in Sydney got trumped by another offer of "not-so-much-less-money-but-far-shorter-working-hours-and-lower-living-expenses" from Brisbane. (does saving oneself from the fiancee's constant nagging about wanting to go back to Brisbane count as a fringe benefit?)

This particular firm in question apparently also has a very, ahem, "free" culture, especially when coming to sporting activities. I will be there late July or early August. Also hoping to squeeze in a quick scuba diving holiday while I am between jobs.

Already spoke to Peter briefly about the Kendo scene in Brisbane. But as he is also busy with his move to Tokyo, I would be grateful for everyone else's input on the state of Kendo in Brisbane/GC.

Again, thanks to everyone in the Sydney Kendo Club (especially Andoru) for taking care of me on my last visit. Hope to see you guys soon!

Hey kanyil - don't forget the Sydney Kendo Club, oldest kendo dojo in Australia (we celebrate 30th anniversary this year). We're located at Willoughby (lower North shore) with satellite dojos in Pyrmont and Hornsby.

We're very chummy with UNSW Kendo Club and we cross-train with each other very often.

In regards to location, stick to the inner suburbs if you can. Sydney Kendo Club is located across the harbour bridge about 10 mins to the north, and UNSW Kendo Club is situated in Kensington, about 10 mins south-east. We're not that far thanks to the harbour tunnel.

Can't speak for everyone else, but we use Koei most of the time.

Crows Nest, Artarmon etc are inner suburbs (i.e. suburbs close to the city) on the north side, and close to our dojo! They're only about 10 mins from the city.

Pyrmont is literally right next to the city actually, though Hornsby is a good 30 mins north.

I also started kendo in Queensland and then came to Sydney. In fact, there are a few kendoka living in Sydney who used to train in Queensland.

Who did you train with?

Hi Kanyil,

I recommend that you have a look at a map of Sydney and live here for a bit before deciding where you will end up on a more permanent basis.

The inner city suburbs (a bit different to inner suburbs) are suburbs like Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, Glebe and Pyrmont. These suburbs are on the south side of the bridge. Pyrmont is a happening place now - as are all of the other inner city suburbs.

There are also suburbs like Kirribilli and Neutral Bay on the north side of the bridge that are pretty close to the business CBD - these suburbs are a bit more expensive.

UNSW and Sydney dojos are accessible by public transport and people will always help you out with a lift on the way home.
