Gun toting and damn proud of it!!!! And God humid hit the nail on the head. Now pickup truck i dont know about.......... here we just call them trucks . I take it you have an issue with guns? dunno why, constitution guarantees the right to......and of course in my state......well "tresspasser will be shot, survivors will be shot again" should be taken at face value..... Guess it comes from a difference in backgrounds. I grew up shooting and hunting, and most of the north grew up with inter-city gang shootings, and preaching about the evils o guns....
Ha, I grew up target shooting with rifles, handguns and shotguns, as did a lot of people I know who've lived up here their whole lives. I've never hunted (never had to). I'll never carry a handgun, but only because I really think it's a chickensh*t thing to do. So, no, I don't have a big problem with guns, I'm just not feverent about it like so many others (NRA) are. In fact, I've been hankering for some skeet lately (the autumn air does that to me). And, in actuality, the only issues I have with the south (which is the southeastern US for those who don't know) are that it's humid for over half the year, and you can't ski anywhere the other half.

Commander, I think you'll find the US a lot safer than you think. I suspect there is an image in other countries that the US is a dangerous place, but it's really just fine. I've lived near/in a big city my whole life and I've never been in an overtly dangerous situation.

Hank.

Everywhere in the states is subject to the same troubles in terms of which state you choose to live in. It is more a factor of urban vs. suburban vs. rural that really effect the frequency of trouble. That and people who are dumb and put themselves in bad situations like walking around a big city alone at 3 in the morning in a bad area are the main reasons for trouble. Common sense is still king.

In terms of nice places that I have been to:

Massachusetts has lots of culture and history to it around the Boston area. Go too far from Boston and you are in the middle of nowhere.

Atlanta, Georgia is really nice. Nice city that doesn't feel slummy. Once again, drive too far and end up in country side. Also drive too far into the country side and have the opportunity to meet Klu Klux Klan members. No joke. Groups like that are still floating around, and especially in southern states.

Florida is nice for the weather.

California is quite nice, although I am partial to northern California. Different living environments depending on where in the state you live. All sorts of places, foresty places, beachy places, cold, hot, city, rural nothing ville. California is definitely neat!

Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont are great for the small countryside/camping/cabin feeling and nice winter skiing. Although the Rockies have much better skiing than the East Coast.

Arizona, especially around Phoenix, is really hot, but dry, but still frigin' hot! Near the cities, stuff to do, go away from cities, end up in middle of desert no where ville. Grand Canyon pretty, but unless you hike into it, pretty boring after a few hours. Arizona is growing really fast now a days though so cities there are changing very rapidly.

You'll have a different experience based on where you live so do your homework before you choose.

Yes, those raging liberals. I forgot about those. They'll tear your throat out if you're not careful.

I never actually said the north was safer than the south. However, as far as the south goes, I have one hyphenated word to descibe it: gun-toting. And one non-hyphenated one: humid. Ooo, and another: flat. Wait, two more: pickup truck.

*kidding*

Hank.
Yeah, step out of Austin and it's like being on a different planet...
I really liked Boston when I was there last year. A little cool and blustery in winter time, but such a great town. Mind you, I was there just as the world series came to an end, so I guess everyone was being even nicer than usual!

Which state is the roughest?
Does roughest mean the highest crime?

http://www.city-data.com/top27.html with population of 5000 or more.

I always thought it was Camden NJ http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6555449/

I've been in Minnesota for 10 years and barely anything happens here. Northern states are the safest But then again, you get the Minnesota winter (50 below) lol Good luck on your training!

Ahahaha, I can't believe nobody has told you yet that there is a Kendo dojo in Charleston, South Carolina. So, you can continue Kendo and possibly Iaido!

Here:

SEUSKF(South Eastern US Kendo Federation)
Charleston Kendo and Iaido Club
Charleston, South Carolina
Contact: Makio Ogawa-sensei

All the contact info is on the website.

I see you do MSR Iaido. I don't know off-hand which Iaido they do. I haven't access to my dojo list, since my computer crashed, so I can't tell you that. Sorry. So, you're going to have to ask them.

Hope that helps make the transition to a new country easier for you!

New England is very nice - and safe, too. No hurricanes to speak of, no earthquakes, tornados, volcanos, grizzlies, mountain lions, poisonous lizards or snakes, etc. You get warm summers and cold winters - you can be at the beach in June and on the slopes in December. Lots of forested land and some sizable peaks for climbing. And Boston is nice.

The Southwest is also pretty neat - I've been impressed by Albuquerque and Tuscon. And California is the default "nice state".

As far as SC is concerned, well, I thought it was pretty boring when I drove through it (once). But that was just a drive through, eh? Maybe I'm wrong.

Hank.
yes safe from all but the raging liberals Come on down south and we'll show you the southern hospitality the north hasnt wuite caught onto yet. I dont know were you get the north(with such wonders as NY and chicago) are any safer than the south. Generaly avoid large towns, and youll be good
