Have you tried Kumis?
Fermented steed milk. Central asian recipie. It's alkohol somewhere in there. If you drink enough, local lore sais you'll reach 100 years.
I think I steer clear of it, risking to die at 99 (like my great-grandfather).

I've been in Japan for over a year, drink regularly, but had my first taste of sake since coming here only last night.
The reason: in southern Japan (Kyushu-where I live), shochu, a clear, distilled drink made from rice, barley, but most popular is sweet potato, called imo-jochu-is the drink of choice. It's considerably higher in alcohol content than sake (25-45%). Its similar to Korean soju, but people don't "shoot" it as Koreans do, but usually have it on the rocks or diluted with hot water.
In this area, beer is obligatory for kampai, but orders for shochu begin almost immediately. People say it doesn't stay in your system like sake, but I have had more than a few hangovers that felt like the universe was being sucked through my ears.
Shochu has become hugely popular in Japan, outselling sake nation-wide. They can't make enough of it to satisfy thirsty salarymen and office ladies in Tokyo and Osaka. The best shochu is made right in my "neighborhood", like being in France for wine-lovers.
Unfortunately, like most things in Japan, they keep the best for themselves, and very little is exported. Even the sake that is available in N. America, unless made locally, is nothing like what you would find here.
As for the hot/cold debate, sake is usually made to be served either hot OR cold, so if you spend dough on a good bottle, its worth knowing what type it is.

I got a bottle of Kyushu Shochu at home...its logo is a horse...ah...I like Kyushu...especially tonkatsu ramen...haha...there's a great ramen shop near kokura castle...the owner is still trying to kill me for running off everytime without for the extra egg I have with the ramen...

I glupped one cup down two weeks ago, never too fond of alcohol, but it wasn't too bad. I like it warm. It tasted almost like rice wine, but ain't sake made out of rice? I just don't know much about alcohol, educate me please.

Personally, from what I've tasted (not drank, mind you) sake can have a pretty nice flavor if you have it when it's hot. When I tasted some cold, it just seemed stronger to me...maybe I'm just weak. But...whatever. It's nothing that'll make your kendo 300% better or anything or give you an epiphany on life, so I think a little wait wouldn't do you harm. I mean...it's not as though kids are hanging out at house parties passing around a nice hot cup of sake...so there's no peer pressure...around here at least.

That's because you lose alcohol content when you warm it! That's why I drink it cold.

Dewasansan is a good one. On the sweet side.

Oni Goroshi is also good, but mostly for drinking with lotus root chips and other fried stuff.

I'm also partial to Bishonen from Kumamoto. It's somewhere between Dewasansan and Oni Goroshi in terms of sweetness. Good with everything if you ask me.

Don't drink if you're underage. Underage drinking is sad because underage drinkers usually drink whatever they can get their hands on (e.g., Boone's Farm, Bud Light). Wait till you can drink legally so you can do it with some class.

don't care too much for cold sake.. but i like nicely warmed sake.. problem with sake is i can't tell when i'm getting drunk.

you sit there for hours and drink it like water and from the head up you are fine.

ha ha. Thanks for the description. I'm currently in the middle of nowhere...i'm one of 2 or 3 asian people in a thirty mile radius, so sake isn't something you see a whole lot of out here.

Hmm. Isn't there some sort of variety/multinational grocery store there? I know down here in good ole Ohio we have a nice place called "Jugle Jim's". They sell all sorts of things including--I guess--a bigger selection of sake. If you really want to taste it I'm sure one trip out of your radius would be worth it...but if you hate it, it'll all go to waste.

Beer pressure, you mean (lol). No, i don't think there are any grocery stores around here that sell sake. There might be some in the city (almost an hour drive). Maybe the next time i'm down there i'll look around

though im not old enough to legally drink it, i think that its much better hot. i say that because not many alchoholic drinks taste good when they're hot.

gives it more of a unique taste?
