Books?
 

I was wondering what reference books people are using for kendo at the minute? I've got Kendo Fundamentals, Vol 1 & 2 by All Japan Kendo Federation. They are quite good in that they give the very basics in a no frills way, despite being very badly translated, though for me that adds to the charm of the books.

I know you can't learn kendo from a book (pre-empting the posts telling me so) but I do find it useful to look over my last session of keiko in a book.

In that case, you are excused from the torment. As long as you are attending real practice with a real sensei/sempai then you are using the books for their true intention.

The only one I use is Ozawa sensei's book, Kendo: The definitive guide. Not because I don't think there are other ones out there that are good, but because I have never gotten around to hunting any down.

I've read several books on Kendo, and I personally prefered "Complete Kendo". "This is Kendo" has been arround a long time, and was the first book I ever read on the subject and is fine.

i have number of books at home.. this is kendo.. definitive kendo.. kendo fundamental 1 and 2.. and even dvd.. but none of them goes into detail like sensei at the dojo. so they more or less collect dust in my room.

i do, however, go over my old copies of kendo nippon occationally. i can't read japanese, but the pictures showing certain techniques are detailed enough to be interesting.

i do read 'looking at the far mountain' occationally for kata. that books very helpful in giving detail on the kata.

you're right nothing is better than the dojo. However, I really enjoy reading about kendo too. It's part of my addiction. Like my wife says, there are worse things to be addicted to!
