Ah I've finally spotted a crowd that would know something about JCCC ... canadians! I need your help. Our Sensei, David Young was sensei at JCCC before, so we want to know more about him http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/cool2.gif ... anyone's got some info? some stories? He was apparently Shane Asa Sensei's best friend ...

(Reading this thread has helped, lol ... i can now see where all his mentality comes from ... his Tsumura Sensei, the clothing, the noodles, the drinking, etc.)

Bring sake to be formal (problem is they probably have MUCH better stuff in the back) and bring something like New York State specific beer or something local to be nice and original.

Ah, you're probably still bypassing all these young upstarts from Australia, Chile and South Africa too.

Tried an excellent Australian the other day - Wolfblass Yellow Label. It's a cabernet. I don't have any wine vocabulary, I'll just say it's really nice.

Hey, that's like talking about poutine from McDonald's while excluding the premium stuff at a casse-croute! I hope there's some good Ontarian wine to be had here but I've been too busy getting all nostalgic for Mission Hill. And yes, I love a great certified Bourgogne or Beaujolais.

roc_kendo, if your group has trouble finding something unique and classy as your club gift from New York, good hard liquor may be an option. For example, an aged single malt Scotch whisky like Lagavulin or Glen Ord. However, I've tried the Glenlivet and I consider it to be a smooth oak facepunch, so you may want to stay away from that one. Ultimately the club gift is up to you and your fellow members.

Sake's ok too, but these guys really know their sake.

No, there is no such thing as good wine from Ontario (or Quebec *sigh*). Except for ice-wine which is really a desert thing and therefore not what real men drink with their steak. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif

He bought what the cashier recommended as the "good" wine. It apparently made a Cabaliero de Chile taste like a Château Pétrus.

I had the privilege of grading at JCCC and have visited the Toronto Kendo Club a couple times. The JCCC dojo is gorgeous and the instruction is first-rate. We've had Shane Asa put us through our paces when he came out to see us last summer.

Bring a present from your club (read: booze), do your normal reigi and be prepared for eating lots of noodles afterwards. Tsumura-sensei is a stickler for detail so make sure your gear is neat and tidy.

Siince most dojos have the same rules, you bow in, bow out, don't wear shoes in the dojo, stick with the same respect rules. You may want to show up early to ask if there is any different protocol for visitors, i.e. where you stand in line.
