Why?
Korean customs: 1. Always remove your shoes when you enter a home. 2. Always refuse a gift, and then accept it after the giver insists and say something like "You didn't have to". 3. When greeting someone older than you, bow. 4. After a meal at a restaurant, tell the server you enjoyed the meal and that they should keep up the good work. Korean manners: 1. Look down at Asians of a different nationality. 2. If you are a teenager or single 20-something, travel in packs with your friends. 3. Esteem yourself higher than others if you or your child attend/attended any Ivy League university. 4. Give dry cleaning discounts only to Korean customers. 5. Serve kim-chee at Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey/ham dinners. 6. Burp at the dinner table. There's more, but these are general ones. Do a search on Google. |

Ive been practicing at a Kumdojang for the past 10 months, i could probably let you in on some manners.
The nodding the head and saying neh a lot, is probably you best bet though, lol. I dont know, you realy need to get used to a lot of things becaue some things are like unwritten law that can be disputed at certain times, lol, idk, I havnt been training that long so i dont know. O yeh, clean the floor after class, bow to the sabaunim when walking in, and bow to the dojang. Ummmm, never chirum anyone unless they chirum you first, unless its a high ranking sensie, then dont EVER chirum them. Wait untill your 1st keup or 1st dan to use chirum, unless your like me and are a special exception ![]() just kidding, but good luck with everything. ahmed. |

Hey kumdo star your PM box is full. "Kumsahaupnida" is how you say "Thank you" in Korean. That is the polite way. (And I think there is an even more polite form.) Kaoru |

hrm....I think hai_hai got most of them...just a few to add..
1. Learn to speak korean?-I'm not fluent, but i'll try to explain...The same word can have different applications..Example: hello. saying hello to someone older/more respectable than you: anyang-hasay-oh (spelled it wrong, probably...oh well. Thats how you pronounce it...), but you say hello to someone younger than you as anyang...(i think..). 2. Burping and farting at the table is considered polite. Seriously. It is. |

hrm....I think hai_hai got most of them...just a few to add.. To add, when you're drinking alcohol, turn your head away from the older ones and drink, there's more, but you could probably find it out by logic thinking. |

Hey kumdo star your PM box is full. 1) He isn't Korean and most likely has had little contact with any kind of Korean culture. 2) His dojang is a complete joke and the guy running it is only in it for the money and is teaching them improper technique. |

[Quote]Where'd you get burping and farting is polite??, Burping quitely is ok, you know, keep your mouth closed and letting the air out behind you. I dont know about farting. And, sayin hello would be "ahnyoung-hasaeyo" (usually to an older person, or someone who meet for the first time and looks somewhat in the age area that is considered mature). Hai-Hai got most, I kinda think those are more the stereotypes, but true. [\Quote]
Thanks for pointing the spelling mistake out...can't speak korean very well, and I spell it even worse..>_>... I think burping and farting is considered polite because it shows satisfaction/contentment with the meal....i think. Really should've paid more attention in those korean culture classes... |

I wouldn't go to him for advice on this because: Anyway, if you want to know exactly why I quit, you can ask, and I'll dig on my thread from 2 1/2 years ago on it. Long story... Kaoru |
