Hi Chris! I'm a local girl. Born and raised. Haven't been outside of Hawaii except for the usual places local people go (Las Vegas, California, Japan, Canada).

Do you just do Kendo or have you tried iaido with Tokeshi-sensei?

I haven't had the opportunity to train with Sato-sensei yet, but I watched him at the 50th anniversary taikai and he was very impressive. I did ji-geiko with Nakamura-sensei once at the Kaimuki Honbu and he's very nice.
they're both really nice guys. Funny too. Learning from sato sensei was always so entertaining

I train at Kaifukan in Kailua. Trained for a while at Myohoji and really enjoyed it. Ikenaga Sensei is very nice - but I must say that Kaifukan ga ichimban!

hey shelly. I don't think i did any of the tsuki correctly! I was so tired i couldn't even aim, too funny. I've been getting worked by all the sensei lately and have so tired after each ji-keiko. I think i'm waaay too tense. Gotta chill and let the technique speak. Taiheiji after new years would be great!!! I'll be palying in Hilo on the 12th of October and might check out the Hilo Hongwanji on the 13th.(anyone training in Hilo?) it'll be a great opp. to meet kendo guys in Hilo. I ask Ikenaga-sensei first to make sure its OK.

Do you mean PBA (Pacific Buddist Acadamy)? It is a private high school. They have a kendo club.

nope... if you wanted to ask one of the people who have been around for a while, they will probably remember it...

One of my dojo-mates mentioned that YBA used to be run by Yoshinaga-sensei and that it became Kenshikan dojo (which just had its 10th Annual taikai this Sunday). If that's so, then you are old, Hyuna.

What is YBA?
No practice there anymore? Whoo... I guess I am getting old

Honolulu YBA is a little bit down from Myohoji. Easiest way to describe is that it is across the Pali Hwy from the Hongwanji. I never really understood what it was. I guess it is like a YMCA kind of thing.

Aloha Naga-San, just ran across this thread. Hi, i'm mike. I've been training at Myohoji since Feb of this year. Started using bogu in may. I met Mr. Brown when he came a few weeks ago (I think he trains at Taiheiji). He gave me advice on seme. I'd like to visit the Taiheiji when my skills get better.
When your skills get better??!! You are too modest, Mike. You're waaay better than me now. If Ueno-sensei was teaching you tsuki then I'd say you're ready to visit Taiheiji. I'm going to visit Taiheiji after all the dojos take their New Years breaks so you can come with me and I'll introduce you to Fukutomi-sensei. Or you can go with Brad or Colin sometime if you can't wait for me. See you Tuesday.

Yes, Matsubayashi-sensei is training me right now. I do the warm ups and other exercises in the beginning, we did the zig zag keiko, it was fun and a good work out. What side you live on? How long you been studying Kendo?

What is YBA? Ikenaga-sensei is still going strong. He keiko'd with Baba-sensei last month and it was awesome.

Twobitmage, you're originally from Wahiawa/Mililani? Did you train with Sato-sensei?
yup, and nakamura sensei.

Naga-san, I live in Kapahulu but grew up in Aiea. Started doing Kendo in November of last year and have been in bogu since February. Will test for ikkyu in November if I can get the hang of the kata (currently stuck on sanbonme). Once the marathon is over I'll probably visit Taiheiji again so I'll see you there. Or, you could come visit Myohoji. We practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:45p.m. to 8:45p.m. Tuesdays is a good day to come because we usually do kata on those days. Do you do Saturday practice at Webling also? And I don't think I mentioned my name earlier, but it's Shelly Ichishita.

Tiki-kun, when did you train at Myohoji? Will you be at the Kenshikan taikai in November?
