Here are some scans of a kendo-scene in "Rurouni Kenshin". Kendo turns up in this manga quite often and, honestly, I have to admit that it was this manga which made me practice kendo myself http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/rolleyes.gif
One of the "main" characters, Myjin Yahiko, is always carrying a shinai around, and is also given kendo lessons by Kamiya Kaoru, the main female character of the series. However, the element of kendo isn't that imported in this manga, it's just used to add some depth to all the sword-slashing action http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/devious.gif PS: Sadly the manga scans in this example are in French, and the translator somehow had the stupid idea to translate "men" in "le front"... http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...speechless.gif http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/rolleyes.gif saraba |
There is Kaze to Ken. I don't know much about it since my Japanese is not proficient as I would like it to be and I only have the third issue. I just happened to find it in a local Japanese store

Can't go past Musashi no ken.
For fans of comic-book samurai drama (?) - I recommend Usagi Yojimbo www.usagiyojimbo.com |
well, a couple people and I were having a similar discussion on another thread, I think the more well known kendo (not kenjutsu) mangas are:

(Why do I find myself always engaged in arguements lately?)
There is a great gap between "able to draw" and "wanting to draw". There aren't many Mangaka out their who likes having Kendo stories... Judo yes. Samurai yes. Ninja yes. Basketball yes. Another theory: in a Kendo match with full bogu on, all the emotions of the characters are hidden, and all the details of clothings will be the same. Can you imagine a Kendo match being represented like Ultraman vs Gorzillas? And the story goes on and on with out any emotions of the characters? I believe CLAMP's drawing skill is far too advanced to draw something like a Kendo match. They like playing with details in their Manga; it's their style. There is no experimenting allowed in drawing Kendo. In fantasy Manga you can add feathers here and there, in basketball there are team uniforms and people's faces. Kendo? Yes, Neon Genisis Evangelion has the most complicated Anime techniques people can ever found in a TV series. BUT please watch all the episodes. After episode 10 or so there isn't any great animation sequences. The production company Gainax went totally out of budget because they've spent far too much cells on EVA. From 11 or so onwards, you'd end up seeing the best use of Anime tricks ever. Re-runs, clip shows, still cells, still photos, still text etc. Dubbings and sounds costs much less so they keep having non-stop dialogues. The most famous one is a scene in ep. 22 where Asuka and Rei just stand in the elevator for 3 minutes of screen time. Brilliant trick. Being able to draw details in one thing, being able to animate/move the details is totally different. BTW, Crayon Shinchan, Nintama Rantaro, Guru Guru Mahozan etc. all rely heavily on plot and not the animated details. My theory is based on the fact that Kendo (with full bogu/ in Shiai) does not interest Mangaka/Animators, not that they can't draw. p.s. I HATE POKEMON!! I'm so glad that I does not belong to that generationhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/cool.gif |

Guys, is this what you're talking about? Musashi no Ken... by Muraue Modoka Manga printed on Weekly Sunday (Boy's Manga-zine) during 1981-85. I haven't read the whole thing yet but indeed it is hugely popular among Kendoka in that generation (who's at school already in 1981). Nice art in the 80's standard, although it's still a typical "boy's manga" story. The first chapter has musasho and his Dad (Iwate policeman) practicing Kendo in the bathtub! Mu.Sa.Shi no Ken Chapter 1 If you've ever tried animation, or even simply line drawing, you'd notice that Kendo is particularly hard to draw. I'm not talking about the action, but the EQUIPMENT!! Can you imagine cell-animators spending time animating all the metal bars on the Men?? My theory it that this is the only reason why you can't see much Kendo in Manga & Anime (as compare to baseball!), because Mangaka and animators would avoid drawing that as much as possible. Even if Kendo took place, it'll probably be off-screen (just heard Kiai at the back). Good tricks for Anime. However there's still occational appearance of Kendo (with full Bogu). For example, the hugely popular "Detective Conan" has an episode (I guess in vol. 31) of murder during a Kendo Taikai. Conan's Kansai friend, Henji, is the son of the Osaka PD head (i.e. some Kendo master). I've seen so many Kendo kids reading Conan before keiko! Also by the same Mangaka (Aoyama Goushou) is "YAIBA!" which is an adventure story of a kid going on samurai training... pretty entertaining when he get to meet Miyamoto Musashi (500-yr-old Yoda looking) and Sasaki Kojiro (still young and handsome). Aoyama Gousho was a Kendoka at school. http://websunday.net/museum/no10/no10ph1.jpg YAIBA! chapter 1 Another one worth mentioning is Ranma 1/2 (see my avatar!)... One of the characters is Kuno Takewaki, which is the team cap of their high school. But he's a jerk who's always in Gi, Hakama and Bokken... The only time he's ever in Bogu is vol. 20-21. I still missed my Manga collection in HK...http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/cry.gif |
Theres a brief scene from "Monster City" where the hero is instructing some kids in Kendo. In the anime he uses a bokken to fight. You can see slips on it in the film Johnny Mnemonic.
Also in the manga Battle Angel Alita(Gunm in Japan) when she fights in the Motorball 3rd league. The champion of the league she takes out is decked in Kendo Bogu. MENG |
Munenmuso,
The storyline you are describing sounds like "Musashi No Ken" to me. I have read the manga many times, but I did not know that there was a cartoon version! |
Heh, I watched it on the TV in my room(next to my bed)...needless to say I slept with my bokuto that night.
Another one of my mates was watching it with some japanese friends and half way through it the phone rang...heh...no one wanted to pick it up. |

akihiro-san,
Thanks. But i never knew the name of the prime character who is a boy because they dubbed it in chinese so they also changed his name but not Musashi.Based from its quality and style of animation,it's an old anime from the late 70's or early 80's,not so sure(not an authority to this). But another inteersting anime is "Yaiba the Legend of the Masterswordsman". This anime is annoying but funny.tells the story of a boy from the rural who finds his way to the city to be the best swordsman. He first used a shinai in his training and there was a bit of kendo match in full gear in the beginning of the story.Later the characters of Musashi Miyamoto(as an old pervert and his sensei), Jubei Yagyu, and Kojiro Sasaki appeared in the scene. Seen this one? |
In the anime Saint Seya the man-servant of the "purple-haired-lady-whose-name-I-can't-remember" wears bogu when they go to fight the bad guys.
