help please

Hi,

I'm Ellen and I'm Belgian. I'm sankyu kendo and I'm in my last year of high school. I'm required to write an assignment on a subject of my own choice and I chose to write about kendo. I have a couple of questions I would like to find the answers to:

*How many kendoka are there in Japan?
*How many (percent) of them are female?
*Can kendo still be considered Japan’s national sport?
*Is kendo still included in the PE lessons in Japanese schools?

*How many kendoka are there in the world?
*How many (percent) of all the kendoka in the world are female?

If someone can give me a reliable answer to any of these questions or anyone knows who I could possibly address in order to have them answered please tell me so. You would really help me out.

Thank you on beforehand!

Ellen

*Can kendo still be considered Japan’s national sport?

It never was.
Sumo is. Judo and Karate are also.
Baseball's a close runner up.
Actually kendo is on the decline as far as popularity in Japan, though this may change.
Recently there is interest again from Japanese young people in older cultural aspects.

*Is Kendo still included in the PE lessons in Japanese schools?

Yes. Depending on the school.

I have already searched Wikipedia but I don't seem to find the statistics there. I also consulted the AJKF website but I have been told their numbers are not correct. There doesn't seem to be a way to contact them as I haven't found an e-mail address on their website either.

I see. Are students still obliged to take kendo? Or is it optional?

There's never been a census taken of Kendo participation in Japan.
Estimates range from about 4 million to 7 million.

*How many (percent) of them are female?
Again I don't think there is any reliable information available. I think it's about 30%.

*Can kendo still be considered Japan’s national sport?
Kendo has never been considered Japan's national sport. Japan's national sport is Sumo.

*Is kendo still included in the PE lessons in Japanese schools?
Yes, but only for boys. From experience, boys get to choose whether they do kendo or judo once a week. The decision is made on a class by class, not individual basis.

*How many kendoka are there in the world?
Not sure. I've read on the net that there are about 350,000 in Korea. Worldwide participation compared with Japan and Korea would not be very significant.

*How many (percent) of all the kendoka in the world are female?
Probably a little less than in Japan.
We need more!

Again, I think it mainly depends on the school, though usually a student can have a choice.
Sort of like an elective.

does it matter if the numbers are wrong?
you should quote sources of your information in essays
so it may be best to say, ''according to the AJKF the number of people...''
rather than ''according to some guy of a forum the number of people...'' http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif
if yoy do some searches on here, it may come up with threads similar to the questions you ask
check out the womans forum on here for instance
good luck

I'm not an idiot. I'm not going to use any numbers that someone here brings up because I know they most likely aren't reliable. I'm more in search of people who can suggest a reliable way to me to get the correct numbers. I would really like to contact the AJKF or another official organisation that might be able to provide me with the numbers but I haven't found a way to contact them thusfar. Please, only reply to this topic if you have some knowledge concerning this subject.
