Doc on LARPing

It was only a matter of time. I want to "get upset and defend my imaginary hexes."

Yeah man how would you like to be the one kenshi in all that chaos. I wouldn't mind having darkon approved naginata. Lets go get us some hexes!

Kilaoksrsa 05-20-2007 12:55 PM

I hate LARP. Just watching it makes me wanna go out and kill everyone with a latex sword...

Oh, hang on...

JasminBerkova 05-21-2007 12:55 PM

made me chuckle http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/tongue.gif but not as much as darkon itself http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif chubby guy taking out the trash talking about being a hero. thats grade A comedy right there!

I may have mentioned that LARP was the last step to doing kendo for me so I can't really cast too many stones, however it does allow me to speak with a certain amount of 'authority'. Darkon looks shit!

When I was doing it back in '94 I first got access to the internet and saw the 'gaffa' weapons they were using in the states it was laughable but understandable considering the letigious nature. Recently I did stumble across a LARPing forum where they were discussing how to make realistic looking latex weapons and there seemed to be a great deal of knowledge in the US about the various foams and rubbers to get the best looking weapons.

So it fills me with a certain confused disgust that the best they can represent is a few dozen Braveheart wannabe's standing behind a plywood castle using nerf swords from the early nineties. That's not a good 'advert' for the genre, which is a shame.

So what character did you play? I only ask so I can take the piss.

AgowlSown 05-22-2007 03:11 AM

By Grapthars Hammer I.....oh, sorry, wrong genre.

did you also strugle internally with the knowledge life isnt letting you be the hero you really are deep down inside?

Im sorry. I just couldnt resist. I have some friends that are into this kinda stuff. I also take the piss out of them sometimes, and then they go and challenge me to a duel http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/tongue.gif
They usually back down after I ask then for $10,000 in advance.
once I actually joined into one of their sword "trainings" using real heave blunt metal weapons. While it was entertaining and had a few good laughs, I never returned.

The US? When I was LARPing (5-6 years ago, at least. Please don't remind me of my dark future http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif) we used to laugh at the weapons used in the US since they looked more like a baton than a sword.
To give a hint on what kind of latex weapons is used in Swedish LARPs check here: http://www.svartakatten.com/sortiment/latexvapen.htm
Fighting is really horrible though, since weapons have basically no weight at all. Swedish LARPs are also often not combat-oriented but social-intrigue-roleplay-oriented.

And no, I will never, ever, ever go back. I prefer hitting people in the head properly http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

The US?
Yes the US! Seriously they can do some highly realistic latex swords, but you are right some are still clearly looking like weapons from the old TV show Gladiators.

I don't recall what character I was, some sort of warrior. Got myself a shield, made a chainmail vest spent £65 on a bespoke latex sword, fought at the Gathering in 1993 with 3,000 other freaks. I mean it's not something to brag about but I wouldn't trade the memories. Y'know each to their own...

Fighting with the swords usually involved wobbling it at them as the more hits you got the more damage you did. I had some laughs, never took it too serious. Never did the full re-eneactment effort with the blunt swords but I know some friends went onto do that and got black powder licenses so they could fire hand canons!

I'm sure I'd still do it now if I had the time or the inclination but you've gotta set standards with that thing and Darkon looks a little cheap, no continuity, it seemed some have real high spec modern replica armour with a crappy eight inch thick foam sword? That's not right. So I made my choice many moons ago in the woods of Loth Moradark that I would lay down the sword of Fargone and behold I was reborn in the guise of Nisshoku a warrior from the East... blah, ring, map, wizard, elf...

I've seen stuff like that before at conventions, but never so en-masse.

Like I say the Gathering in Derby, 3,000 people

here's a link, with some slightly 'better' examples of LARPers

the LARP-ing where everyone is really into it looks brilliant...

you would have to fully immerse yourself in it. iimagine there would be nothing worse that confronting a bad guy and he stops whilst he answers his mobile....

looks like great fun.

Seriously though, whatever floats yer boat.... I used to do a fair bit of D&D (and Paranoia... now that's a role-play game) when I was younger.
