I wear a leather bracer around my wrist, but the bump is more towards the middle finger knuckle area.
Kote Pad you say? What is that? On the Doctor thing, I am always hesitant to visit him with my Kendo injuries because usually when I describe what I do in Kendo, (Mainly get hit with sticks) he always shakes his head and goes, "Why would you want to do that? It's not good to get hit with sticks..etc"..Anyhoo, it doesn't hurt or anything, It just looks strange. It sort of feels like an enlarged knuckle. What kind of kendo striking makes your middle knuckle swell up? I have, like, a little patch right where everybody hits my kote that doesn't have as much feeling as my left wrist (I let my little brother hit me there just because he is always amazed that I don't flinch and it doesn't hurt), and it gets bruised and swollen every now and again...but the only time my actual hand gets swollen is when someone hits incorrectly or tsukis me in my hand (also accidental). Swollen knuckle doesn't sound standard to me...are you sure you don't have something else going on? ![]() That |

Now that I think about it, it could be from blocking men incorrectly and getting whacked in the hands, when I should be parrying. But my hands were pretty much in bad shape from doing other Martial Arts anyway. Ugh..I *suppose* I should see a Doctor... |

Getting hit over and over again in the hand seems to be the main reason for the enlargement, could be that that since I'm tall people are hitting to close.. ![]() I was just thinking that if its swelling for an unknown reason maybe you have some....lymph node...thing or something (I am sooo not a doctor). but if people rountinely hit you there, it makes sense that its swollen. |

How did you even find that? I thought no one in their right mind would search for the picture I was talking about, but the key is "no one in their right mind". Should've known you'd go and bring the nightmare back to me. Well, at least I'm not the weightlifter. It's that disturbing. ~Sort of burned into the old neurons. ![]() |

Perfect timing, Kenzan! Last night during keiko I got quite a few nasty hits on my hand, between the index and middle finger knuckles to be exact. It happened when I tried to block kote, I think... (I know, I shouldn't do that...) And my forearm is pretty bruised.
Now my hand is a bit swollen in that area, but nothing too bad. Hurts a bit, but not much. Hurt like hell when it got hit, though... ![]() ![]() |

To me, its not so much jigeiko, and shiai that hurts (actually I can't recall it ever hurting) but during the waza part of practice....wow. People love to let it rip during large kote. Worst places to get hit (on a scale of pain)...
1. The ear. I don't care what you say, not even the scrotum tsuki guy can convince me it hurt worse than a good whip to the ear. At least he could laugh a few moments later, the ear shot will make you tear up with rage. Forget it, you're going to be pissed off the rest of practice. 2. Missed tsuki. No, not the neck- burning glance off of the side, you know the one I'm talking about. The kind that finds its way under the men.The direct hit in the throat kind. You're just glad to be alive. 3. Gyaku do. Hate arm pit shots during do practice? Well thats baby stuff, compared to the well placed armpit destroyer called gyaku do. Go ahead, try it. I promise your ki ai will jump up a couple of octives. Carefull, this one can cause grown men to curse. 4. The way too agressive but not enough tenouchi large kote. Usually dished out by the super-samurai new guy (or girl). Not in bogu yet? Well prove yourself...by really trying to take my wrist off. No, I insist. 5. The white light a.k.a. too much men. This is that men shot that creeps past the sturdy, padded section of your men and tenouchi is applied just as it hits the back of your head. This usually happens for three reasons. Either their ma ai was wrong, they over do it with the right hand, or you ducked. When it happens, don't go towards the light, but trust me, you'll see it. 6. The perfect tsuki- Its the tsuki that couldn't have been timed better. you're coming towards them and launch a men assault. During the split second when you are airborne and about to snap a good one on their dome they simply step forward. You gag, airborne again. You contemplate the value of breaking somone's kamae before attacking. Hurts your pride worse than the physical action. 7. Hand jive a.k.a. missed kote-The stuff Kenzan is talking about. It will re-shape your right hand's future. Like strange colored bruises? Enjoy cruchy ligament, or bone, or whatever formed in your hand? Can't stand those pesky nerves i the back of your hand? Then you'll love recieving your twice a week doses of knuckle shots. 8. Synchronized pain a.k.a. kote- men. Step one, line up with a partner. Step two, launch simultaneous kote men attacks on each other, until you or your partner's right thumb refuses to let the silliness continue. |

Serious weight lifters have very strong core muscles which they need to lift and control the weight. Then, when performing an overhead lift like the snatch or clean and jerk, they tense up their abdomen to help them push the weight up. Now, it's not like something you or I could relate to as these guys are superstrong so it's hard to describe how hard they are pushing and contracting their muscles. Additionally, a lot of them also wear a very, very, tight fitting uniform to help control their muscles which contributes to squeezing their core muscles together. So basically, this guy just squeezed his innards out of himself. Just imagine a super-duper, super-duper bowel movement. 2) what EXACTLY is coming out? his colon? his intestines? I can figure that one out. 3) why is there no blood? I probably shouldt be bringing this gruesome picture up anymore, but these questions are driving me nuts. ![]() |

after having not seeing this kid in our dojo for awhile.. he came this week. then again, he might have been there when i wasn't. anyway, we had about 20 new people showing up and i took more experienced people aside to give them something to do while my sempai, mike w, was going over things with new people. the kid got lot better with him timing, but he was keep hitting my with is shinai. first it was hitting my head for men, then my wrist.. told him about tenouchi, and told him to control his shinai. that worked for him rather well.
i always wear kote pad while doing kihon geiko. that way, it's lot less distracting when someone try to cut my hand off with their shinai. pete |

So after i showed this to everyone at the bar last night on my cell phone, people came up with good questions. 1) why is his singlet ripped? I dont thin kpushing your innards out would rip your pants There's a good chance it's fake, methinks. |

I am not sure if anyone mentioned this but, what about making sure that your wrists are facing more towards the inside when holding the shinai?, maybe you are offering your knuckles instead of the kote-bu? |
