Hawk the Slayer

No self respecting forum, regardless of topic is ever complete without a thread on Hawk the Slayer. I've resisted thus far from discussing this seminal 80's sword and sorcery epic that according to the director goes "one step further than Star Wars".

Luckily I received the special edition DVD for my birthday a while back and only just know watched one of the special featuers "By the sword divided - candid on-location interview with the cast and crew". It's not edited but does contain some of the worst interviewing I've ever seen which is worth it's weight in comedy value alone. However in it director Terry marcel says they were inspired by Japanese samurai films and kendo sword play, therefore you should all buy it as a training guide.

Personally I want an elfin mind sword for my next practice, are they allowed in gradings?

OMG.. I *loved* that movie when I was a kid... haven't thought about it in probably 20 years... Thanks for bringing it up!!

Jack Palance played an awesome bad guy...

..but I have a feeling if I went back and watched it today, I would think that movie was really really lame..

It is, but I love it nonetheless. Peter Jackson stole all his ideas for Legolas and the LotR elves from this film.

So JRR Tolkien didn't design 'em...?

I believe what was once discussed was that Mr Tolkein's elves were never described as firing arrows at a rate of 6 or 7 a second but Mr Jackson's do, and Crow in Hawk the Slayer did just that.

For those unaware of this movie, an American equivalent would be...say.."Beastmaster".

Actually, you were told in LOTR by JRR Tokein about how Legolas was able to bring the arrow and nock and draw it faster than the eye could see. So if he could do that, he could also shoot arrows at an alarming rate. Btw, Im a dork.

I guess I was ditracted by the forty pages of Tom Bombadill prattling on http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

Oh and Bestmasters production values were much higher than Hawk's. I had such a crush on Tanya Roberts after that film. I have a VHS copy with a Josh Kirby [?] cover, the guy who does the Terry Pratchett covers. I'd say Hawk is more similar quality to the Sword and the Sorceror with shades of a Hammer Horror.
