Default How to they determine the winner of a naginata shiai?
I was watching some of the naginata shiai they have on youtube and although I saw what looked like clean men kote, and other hits, no flags went up. So question is, after the shiai is over, how do they decide who wins? Kind of seemed like a boxing scoring method to me...maybe mental point scoring? And I'm asking cause I'm curious.

Scoring follows the same principle as kendo. Cuts need to be made to valid datotsu, using the mono-uchi, with proper hasuji, and with ki-ken-tai-ichi. Learning to recognize all of these elements is nearly as hard as learning to do them in my experience. Sorry that I don't have an easier answer, but I don't think there is one.

First, they try and divine a winner by reading tea leaves. If that doesn't work they try a weegie board. If they still can't get an answer they try and raise Elvis' ghost and ask him. Barring all that, they just ask "what would Mr. T do?"
