Its easy. If the ninjas have patches, they must be legit. Especially if they have an American flag patch.

what about equipment like how much does it cost and training like is it still possible to train in the traditional way

Thunderzee 10-02-2007 02:42 PM

Traditional way?

You mean start by cleaning the floor with a washcloth followed by kirikaeshi till you vomit?

Or something else?

TopcigsCOM 10-02-2007 02:43 PM

before the questions and flames about your question as to training in the traditional way fall from above, I'll just say that in modern kendo, there is - to me anyway, a substantial amount of 'tradition' in the sport. however, there are no real swords. no blood, no guts, no harikari - but a good ass kicking workout that can leave you mentally and physically drained.

crap: i was too late - but far too tame than the Ignatz I know - I wonder if someone hacked his account http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

Equipment: a beginner set at ebogu can cost you a little under a hundred bucks. shinai, hakama and Keikogi. The armor comes later and can vary. A little online searching can help - as can a perusal of the online shops listed under the Bogu thread.

Again... where in TX are you? We might be able to help you with your search.

I would rather clean the floor after the kirikaeshi-followed-by-vomit...

i wasn't pointing to the idea of using swords but like when i was younger i was involved in another MA. We didn't use pads or have matted floor so when we fell it hurt like hell it was more of a toughing up thing. In other facilities would see pads and mattes on the floor

mpxricyNimb 10-02-2007 03:08 PM

There won't be any pads or mats, but also no throws. A nice (and sometimes sticky) waxed hardwood floor. No one will ask you to get hit without armor either. Though once you're in armor, you may suffer the occasional stray kote strike that catches a knuckle or elbow and the occasional do strike may go a little high or low.

As you're in Texas, I'm sure you're used to (at least more than folks up north) exerting yourself physically in the heat.

Not necessarily true. Our club does not have AUSKF membership.
True, but you can prove that your dojo isn't a McDojo. Others cannot even begin to do that. Very rarely do legit kendo dojo exist that are not AUSKF affiliated. That's why you have to be so darned careful. Remember, I once fell into that trap myself. It was not pleasant to find out 5 1/2 months later the Kumdo(Same thng as kendo just only with korean terms, if legit.) I learned wasn't the real thing. I had to re-learn everything. No fun!!
My teacher called himself "Master" and he could barely do kumdo himself. Nevermind the ratty way he dressed in class. However, I was so glad to finally go to a real Kendo dojo and unlearn every bad habit and technique.

I got your PM. I'll reply soon. Thank you. I read everything you sent me. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif I added it to my list. (I won't add just any dojo, either! Not to be snobbish, but I do like to have only legitimate dojos in my list.)

I'll say this: If a dojo is not affiliated with the AUSKF, no rank can be earned and nobody can participate in any AUSKF sanctioned event such as tournaments or seminars/camps.

Oh. And no offense Verissimus-san. I'm just stating what is true. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif And, it's nothing against your dojang at all. I don't want the above to sound like it is. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

None taken. I completely agree. Some of us worry about it, but for most part, our current situation works.

Although we do participate in the Austin and Dallas tournaments.

Can you give your exact town please? That makes it much easier to find you a dojo properly. Giving a vague location doesn't help. I like to use maps. Thanks. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

In the mean time, I'm going to find out where Abliene is, to get some idea. But, a solid location would be good, if you wouldn't mind.

Abilene's about 150 miles west of Dallas. By the looks of it, the closest dojos would be in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Unless there are others around.

Cool. Thanks http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif And yeah, I noticed that. Nice website, btw! I'll try to PM you soon. Now I'm off to see where Abliene is. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

Thanks. There's a dojo to the west, thinking off-hand if I remember right, but no idea how close to him it is. I wish I knew his town.

There is El Paso which is slightly less than the distance from here to Mars. We are talking about Tejas here.

That didn't help! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.gif I need a name. If Sweetwater isn't your town, it's no good. Btw, please don't write run-on sentences. Please use good English. It's hard to read your post when you use no punctuation. Thanks and sorry. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif
