before the questions and flames about your question as to training in the traditional way fall from above, I'll just say that in modern kendo, there is - to me anyway, a substantial amount of 'tradition' in the sport. however, there are no real swords. no blood, no guts, no harikari - but a good ass kicking workout that can leave you mentally and physically drained.

Equipment: a beginner set at ebogu can cost you a little under a hundred bucks. shinai, hakama and Keikogi. The armor comes later and can vary. A little online searching can help - as can a perusal of the online shops listed under the Bogu thread.

i wasn't pointing to the idea of using swords but like when i was younger i was involved in another MA. We didn't use pads or have matted floor so when we fell it hurt like hell it was more of a toughing up thing. In other facilities would see pads and mattes on the floor

There won't be any pads or mats, but also no throws. A nice (and sometimes sticky) waxed hardwood floor. No one will ask you to get hit without armor either. Though once you're in armor, you may suffer the occasional stray kote strike that catches a knuckle or elbow and the occasional do strike may go a little high or low.

As you're in Texas, I'm sure you're used to (at least more than folks up north) exerting yourself physically in the heat.

True, but you can prove that your dojo isn't a McDojo. Others cannot even begin to do that. Very rarely do legit kendo dojo exist that are not AUSKF affiliated. That's why you have to be so darned careful. Remember, I once fell into that trap myself. It was not pleasant to find out 5 1/2 months later the Kumdo(Same thng as kendo just only with korean terms, if legit.) I learned wasn't the real thing. I had to re-learn everything. No fun!!
My teacher called himself "Master" and he could barely do kumdo himself. Nevermind the ratty way he dressed in class. However, I was so glad to finally go to a real Kendo dojo and unlearn every bad habit and technique.

I'll say this: If a dojo is not affiliated with the AUSKF, no rank can be earned and nobody can participate in any AUSKF sanctioned event such as tournaments or seminars/camps.

Abilene's about 150 miles west of Dallas. By the looks of it, the closest dojos would be in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Unless there are others around.

i don't live in a town its more of a community abliene is the closest major town the rest is just old farm towns with and oil field the only other town if u can call it that would be sweetwater but maybe next summer (when i get out of "college" which i have to drive 30 min 2) im moving to Dallas or Houston

sry i do that when im rushing a thought. But its hard to explain the closest town that i live is sweetwater. but i don't live in sweetwater i live way out on county line in a farming community so simply i live in sweetwater
