Wanting to Start
 

So i was thinking about learning kendo and im not sure where to start and how to go about such a thing. Any advice i get will be much appreciated.

Find the nearest dojo that is AUSKF affiliated, contact them and go watch a practice and chat with the head instructor.

what if there isn't an auskf dojo with in 180 miles

Then its not kendo, no matter what they tell you.

Then tell us here where about you live and wait a while. After a while all sorts of opportunities and offers for rides pop up here. It's amazing how helpful people can be here. If they want that is. Not necessarily true. Our club does not have AUSKF membership.

In which part of TX are you located?

If there is nothing close by (hope is not the case) think about taking something else up in the meantime, I am sure you will have other MA's available close by

Whet he probably meant to say was that if it is AUSKF then it is most probably a decent school, if it is not then you should do some reasearch. There are legit kendo schools that for some reason or another are not in the AUSKF (although membership is a good thing) but you are more likely to find a bogus one in that group.

Heck, 180 miles in Texas is only about 1 hour 45 min. right?

Folks, I don't think the issue is one of affiliation so much as "can I train on my own?".

Sorry. Since he's new to the whole kendo thing, I thought I'd steer him clear of the typical non-AUSKF affiliated dojo.

Latrech, steer clear if a "dojo" has any of the following...

1. An explaination of why their kendo is "more combat oriented" than kendo.
2. If you are asked to pay the several months of dojo fees at one time.
3. If they have patches all over themselves.
4. If they play music in the background during practice.
5. If the instructor demands loyalty.
6. If they "teach" you to cut things with real swords.
7. If your instructor talks a lot about Musashi Miyamoto.
8. Ninjas
9. The instructor demands you change clothes in front of them.
10. If the dojo also offers tae kwon do.
11. If there is a poster of a tiger on the wall.

This is not always the case. If you find a dojo/dojang near you, go in, watch a few classes, ask some questions, talk to the sensi, get an overall feel for the place. If you can't recognige if it's legit kendo/kumdo on your own, come back here and chances are that someone here has heard of the school and can give you solid advice. Good luck.

Yesterday we had a couple of visitors from Dallas (~190 miles) and it took them 3.5 hours.

Not a sticky I could find, but a brief browse through a search result list will reveal the succinct answer to that question.

But you would never know if they were real Ninjas............ Or do you?
