Wiki and the interweb virgins...

I remember being told a story by my Sensei about Benkei and a man who fought against him, I fancied learning more so i thought a quick stop over to wiki for a first step in maybe some more in depth research would be a good call... i'm not writing an essay or anything. I tell my students to only use wiki for pictures or for a starting point and in under no circumstances should i see citations to wiki in reports. Usually they wonder why...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minamoto_no_Yoshitsune

Some funny bugger's been at it!!!

was going to change it but i don't have a wiki account...

You spotted any silly wikis?

(Not wookies)

There's one in every class. Be great if it showed up in a paper.

Fixed the article. His Majesty owes me big time.

[Psycho] I want to hurt people who vandalises Wiki-articles. There are too many morons outthere who gets off vandalising [/Psycho] http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../confused2.gifhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/mad.gif

What was wrong with it?

Everwondopedo 05-17-2008 09:18 AM

As someone who marks assessment pieces at university level, I deduct marks if I see Wikipedia used as a reference.

It was changed back. The vandalised version replaced Yoshitsune with "yoSHITsune"

You can always go to the History tab and look at previous versions, here is the vandalized version of the page in question.

Yup - agree wholeheartedly. For as many useful and interesting things that the interweb allows us to access from our own homes, there are so many pieces of garbage floating around. Including 12 year olds that take pleasure in vandalizing somebody's efforts for 10 seconds of glory.

I'd never use wiki as a source of concrete information, but I really do enjoy cruising wikis because there hasn't been a time that I haven't learned something new.

Do Europeans and Canadians call the internet the "interweb" (and vice versa, I don't mean to be presumptuous)?

What about Japan? Is there a Japanese word for it or do they just say "internet" / "interweb"?

Do everyone other than Americans call it the interweb? That's totally fascinating. I'd never heard that before. I wonder how it happened that way. I can't even remember when I stopped calling it the "world wide web" and started using "internet."

Well, for me anyways, I heard the term somewhere and started calling it "interweb" as a joke, essentially. I suppose more generally the term's evolved into the same type of online elitism (perhaps too strong a word, but I can't think of any other right now) as applied to "newbies" or "noobies".

Just my two cents http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

You're 100% correct.
When used, it's a joke on a joke.
Note: if you think you are l33T, that's a sure bet that you aren't.

As far as I have seen, The true Elite of the technical world tend to speak proper English, and are you know,
Educated.
-Also, they certainly above all, never think of themselves as "elite."

In any case, the correct term is still "The Internet."

Oh.

Well that's a lot less interesting but somewhat of a relief since I thought I was crazy for not having heard the term before.

This reminds me of the days of Lynx where we had to type out the http:// and there were no images, as the other old timers will no doubt remember.

First time I've ever heard someone call it "interweb". But hey! I guess all trends have a beginning. Just look at "lame", "gay" & etc.

And remember when all there were only bulletin boards, mostly on phreaking, but even more mostly just a repository for Star Trek/Star Wars/ Lord of the Rings/ D &D Nerds.

I learned to program in FORTRAN on punch cards, just so you know where to place me in the old fogie line.

'77 or -IV? I miss format statements...

KellyLynchIV 05-17-2008 01:52 PM

It all sort of blends together for me now, but I think I remember listservs and "ntalk" on UNIX better. Are you thinking of "muds"? I vaguely recall those.

Sheesh. That was 15 years ago. Long before the wonders of Google and Wikipedia.
