Battlefield Tournament: Mixed Weapon Martial Arts
 

I got this in my email, posted something similar in my own (Texas-based) forum. Just curious about the opinions of those who frequent this forum.

Yeah, I'm in Texas, same state as the event (hence my interest), but at 200+ miles between me and the organizers I really have no connection. Just curious to others' take.

I am not hawking, endorsing or demeaning this event.

Schlager, You found a beauty (or it found you). The biggest load of BS imagionable.

A blackbelt level tournament, hahahaha http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif that's funny. I guess that means we're out of the picture, considering we don't have a black belt level, only dan grades. Also some folks get a "black belt" while training at a mcdojo, now that's real save when it comes to sparring. I guess you should bring your shinken along if you decide to go (and a yoroi).

It has:
* Weapons kumite: Woohoo real sword fights (yeah right http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/laugh.gif);
* Kata comp (that's going to work real well, comparing bo to sword http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../confused2.gif);

* Open sparring (that's going to be painful).

On a more serious note, I'm guessing it some XMA/BS krotty tourney. I have some serious concerns though:
Weapons for sparring will be made of wood of approximate size and weight to the real thing. Required safety equipment for sparring is: head with full face gear; shoulder, elbow, and knee pads; gloves of some type; and groin protectors for the males. All techniques should exhibit control. Control means contact without damage. A stinging or slight bruising is an acceptable risk but drawing blood or breaking bones are not. Judges maintain the right to determine what acceptable contact is. Due to the possibility of great damage with minimal contact, controlled strikes to the head will be strictly enforced (i.e. Drawing blood, causing a concussion or loss of consciousness or other such excessive contact to the head are grounds for disqualification). Judges determine excessive contact. Competitors or judges may call a time out if they observe any safety issues in the ring. Yeah, real save. NOT. Judging if excessive force has been used after some one has been killed is real useful.

I take it you aren't familiar with the Dog brothers or ARMA? They use wood/rattan weapons and not much more protection than gloves. They also do a variety of weapons matchups as well.
