Fancy Bogus
Just came to my mind...
How come the high level kendokas of "the all japan" don't use fancy bogus ? I know it's retarded but I want to hear your thoughts on it |
I'd say because fancy bogu serves absolutely no purpose beyond a certain point. Really only 3 things you can change that has any impact on the protection bogu provides- stitching, material and thickness. Once those are optimal nothing else really matters

Bogu is one of those loan words which, if you add an s to it, it becomes a completely different English word.

I guess it depends on your definition of 'fancy'...
if you mean 'flashy' as in loud colours etc. Both Yoneya and Kiwada have coloured do-dai... and Shodai has some pretty funky bogu too... Also, Eiga has one of my favourite Do mune designs in his possesion... However, if you mean fancy as in expensive, then there is plenty of that... To be honest overtly 'flashy' isn't really fashionable at the moment... Though it isn't unheard of... last week I saw probably the worst looking bogu I have ever seen in my life, and it was in use by a 6th dan! I guess, in my opinion, 'fancy' has a different meaning at the minute, people tend to prefer small, less noticible details to be 'fancy' and/or stand out from the crowd. |

I am assuming by 'fancy' you mean flashy. The reason most higher ranked kendoka don't use real flashy kendogu is that they prefer to let their kendo do the talking. Most of them have high quality kendogu, just not flashy (although there are certainly some higher ranked kendoka that do have somewhat flashy kendogu such as brightly colored do, white kendogu, etc). I have always just assumed that it is due to being humble as opposed to being in your face about rank and skill.

As it was pointed out in the above posts, I don't think they're flashy but expensive and very well made. Someone told me that this year some of the Japanese team got their bogu from Shobudo, their hand stitched sets start at 4k, I imagine the ones the team members were wearing were well over 10k.

Most of high ranking are policemen, how can they afford such expensive bogu?

I'm just courious:
Are there any pictures of fancy bogu with coloured do or else in the net? I googled it but I didn't succed. I saw some photos of for example green or sort of dotted do on a store's page but I've never seen one of them worn. |

The fact that Mr Taniguchi is wearing a two sizes too big men and holding the shinai like he is strangling a chicken, gives a fairly good steer on who wears fancy bogu.

Maybe they prefer to let their kendo speak rather than their kendo toys.
