Kendo or Kumdo?

Hello everyone. I have been reading the forums for awhile and I have learned alot, thank you. I am very new to Kendo and I love it.

I told one of my friends in California that I was taking kendo and they sent me this link...http://www.completemartialart.com/kendo/

I tried to explain to my friend that the example above is not Kendo. I think it is Kumdo, but I am not sure. What do ya'll think?

Maybe you missed the banner up top, where it says "Hwa Rang Do"?

Those people are not doing Kumdo.

Kendo and Kumdo are the same thing.

I like the "kneeling" do. It's just like in nanahon me kata.
I also like this:

10-Day Martial Art
Boot Camp Online:

Enter your name and email address in the form below and begin your 10 day Hwa Rang Do boot camp immediately:

You can start immediately now if that isn't quick service than I don't know what is.

I would definitely join that dojo if I lived nearby - their website says you will "Learn the best attack for every situation you may encounter." I've always felt that most dojo are lacking when it comes to teaching what to do if attacked by a panda on a unicycle while falling from an aircraft above the Swiss Alps.

Is this in flames yet? What ever that link is to it’s neither. All I can say is ouch, their elbows and tare certainly got a workout. Look up what federation you should be in, go to their website and find a dojo that is listed, the dojo you have a link to is 99.99% not affiliated with the AUSKF.

I believe Orishiki Do used to be a valid waza in pre-war kendo. I'll have to try it sometime, not like ive never practice nanhonme before.

I don't think what they're doing is Orishiki-do, at least not how it was described to me. It looks like they have Suneate on their tare and the strike is to the hip or thigh, not do, not to mention they're sliding in and hitting it. They just need to add in ripping the men off maybe a little kidney stomping and the picture would be complete. Either way its neither kendo or kumdo, but I would like to see someone try that on a high ranking sensei just to see what he’d do.

Oh man, that twirling hiki leg strike at 2:47 made me all tingly.

ZIDouglas 12-25-2009 10:21 AM

There actually is a technical term for what they are doing: "Crap" wonder who the guy? is that's wearing those red pyjamas... and as if they're not embarrassed enough by the weird twirly dealie at 2:47 which culminates in a whack to the tare, they have to replay that a couple of times.

Then again, any school(?) that lets me master over 108 different weapons must be a force to be reckoned with.. if only on the comedy circuit.

raskrutkaseo 01-12-2010 06:04 AM

ouch, reminds me of 2 mudans I saw at a summercamp once, went in for do at the same time, and got a simultaneous thigh smack, they both limped off to the side and sat down after that.
