sticks on a plane?
Has anyone ever tried to get a long object into luggage?
I made a bunch of walking sticks since moving up here, but I'll be flying home to Toronto for Christmas. I thought some of these would make great Christmas gifts, but I just realized I don't have a carrying case long enough. A couple of these are taller than my head height, so I'm not even sure if cardboard boxes come that long, help anyone? |
I just brought back a few shinai and bokuto from Japan no probs. So long as they're well packaged there should be no probs checking them in. As cabin luggage though I think they'd be no go. You could probably wrap them in cloth and then tape them up. You might find that they'll be unwrapped and inspected if they look a bit dodgy in the x-ray though.

Have you considered packing the walking sticks like snow skis? In the past, airlines would provide the box and you could take them to the airport a few days before your flight.

I recommend you check with the airline as to the max dimensions for a tube that won't get you into overcharges, then go to a carpet store and ask for an old center tube of a carpet roll. Usually they are happy to get rid of them, will give to you.
Cut to proper length, stuff with your toys, stick some padding / clothes whatever, tape the ends with shipping tape, there you are. I have one I've used for years with everything from jo to live swords, it's been great and cost about 20 cents for the tape. I did tape a block of styrofoam on the side to keep it from rolling - I had a vision of it rolling in front of a moving 747. But now it looks just like a shoulder fired antiaircraft missile http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/eek.gif and I have gotten some odd looks walking through airports with it. 四尺杖 |
I suggest to buy a snowboard sack, i buy one of those for some 2 meter long poles spending 8 € (more or less 13 U$)
