Mr. Kukrit Pramoj´s centenery of birth on the 2010-2011 UNESCO list of anniversaries
Source: NNT The final consideration of the world Anniversaries of Great Personalities and Historic Events has officially announced during the 35th General Assembly of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization that is currently held at its Paris Headquarters. This year, The UNESCO 2010-2011 list of anniversaries had included (MR) Mom Rajawongse Kukrit Pramoj’s centenary of birth in 2011 on the list due to his great achievements regarding his influence in the Thai society. Born on April 20, 1911 in Sing Buri, Thailand, M.R. Kukrit Pramoj was brought up by an upper class family. He was sent to England to attend British boarding school since his childhood and carried on his study paths to Oxford University. He returned to Thailand after his graduation with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and started his first job in banking. During his life time, he had always been interested in arts, politics and journalism. His hard works and his contributions leads to his great achievements as the 13th Prime Minister of Thailand, a renowned writer, a devoted scholar as well as a National Artist for Literature in 1985. Regarding his achievement in Arts and Culture, a number of his literary works had been introduced to the public, including the Three Kingdoms, Capitalist Version, Farang Sakdina - Westerners with titles of Thai nobility and many other nonfiction works. His two novels that had been translated into English as well as his articles in Siam Rath, the newspaper that he founded were also the highlights of his literary talents. He once took up a role in a Hollywood movie with Marlon Brando, the famous American actor in the movie called The Ugly American in 1953. Recognized as one of the most influential person in Thai history M.R. Kukrit Pramoj passed away on 9 October 1995 at the age of 84. The celebrations of the centenary of his birth endorsed by UNESCO will take place in the month of April, 2011. However, this year’s 35th General Assembly, apart from the announcement of 63 celebratory activities that UNESCO will be associated with in 2010-2011, another special highlight is the installation of the new Director-General to take over from Koïchiro Matsuura of Japan as the first woman-elect, a Bulgarian diplomat Irina Bokova.
