Hey all, i was wondering if anyone could help me out, i had a Damascus steel katana and i did a cutting test and the tsuka was poor quality wood and the first cut it shattered, i have a design of the tang and im looking for a person to make or someone to help me make one, like a video or pick of step by step, thanks all

A few caveats ... Since your handle broke immediately upon use, I would guess that your 'damascus' katana is one of those very cheap Chinese imitation swords that are available for next to nothing. This would make the blade good for hanging on the wall as an ornament at best, as those are not normally heat treated and so are unsafe for any sort of actual use. That being said, it costs from $300 to $800 to have a new tsuka made (quite a bit more than you paid for your sword). I know of no videos, but there is quite a bit of information about it on-line if you'll use Google.
I would suggest that you apply your energies into actually learning about how decent swords are made rather than how to fix your imitation sword. Much better investment of your time in the long run.

Good luck!

Please do not cut with cheaply made swords if you like your face and limbs intact. Good thing it was the handle that broke and not the blade...

When i got the sword it was from china but it had a pools of water and eye pattern to it and the harmon was there, but my father thought it would make a great cleaver to hack frozen meat lol, hes a woodsman so its acceptable lol, but he used a file to sharpen it and i tried to polish it to get the pools back but it just got clouded, and it was a 1200 dollar sword when i bought it with shipping to me, and i looked at the handle and it was just a rotten piece of wood they had lying around, i can email or post pictures on twitter or face book if anyone would like to see it, my email is jmichelin@live.ca.

it costs that much to get a tsuka made for a katana i think it try to make one on my own lol, but i would like any advice anyone has to give, also where can i get a reasonably priced katana for display and for practice, anyone know??

would it be up for sale by any chance, I have an extensive collection of swords and this one sounds interesting, it could be a lot older than you think, that could be why it broke.

Mr. Michelin, if you have not already done so, please give the following website a thorough read: http://www.jssus.org/nkp/fake_japanese_swords.html

it had the kengyo butt end and the itame style of grains and the Omaru style of harmon, the tsuka was probally old but i have a Katana that is a tshinogi - zukuri curvature with a budda and cow fitting style, it has the omaru stly harmon aswell i was thinking that it was a fake, im away from my parents home so it would be hard to get pics of that sword, i thought it was a fake but i looked at the site that Brian has told me about but it was not on there, and 1 cut 1 kill i dont really want to sell it seeing it is my fave sword i have, i have a hand honed kill bill demon sword, and that one i refer to as an antique, the menuki hole was alil damaged, so i replaced it with peg i did up myself, and the blade came to me alil damaged like someone tried to sharpen it LOL, looks bad, and i havent tried to do anything with the blade, but i cleaned up the fittings alil bit

and the blade tip is a chu - kissaki and no filings or any signatures, the blade is clouded with my amateur polishing im sad to say the harmon is not visible but scratches are
