Default WAFL Tips round 5
The season is a marathon as always, but some vital games this round especially for East Perth and Swans. Two sides who have been talked up pre-season for obvious reasons.

__________________________________________________ ____________

PERTH vs PEEL THUNDER @ Brownes Stadium Lathlain - Saturday

This is a big opportunity for the Demons to consolidate, but it wont be easy. Peel will be looking for their first victory of the season, and they know all too well that a win at Lathlain is not unusual for them. The Demons have shown some good early fight, which is what their fans have been craving. It appears that maybe Perth have adjusted their approach to handling the ball, compared to their previous coach Andrew Jarman. The Demons last two wins have come with them having less overall disposals than their opposition. In fact they have handled the ball less than their opposition in every game and they still found themselves in potential winning positions, also against the Sharks in the opener. Another notable difference is the even spread of contributers across the board for the Demons. Andrew McDougall had an outstanding game last week with 27 disposals. He is vital to the demons chances with his height and agility. Peel have been very servicable in their opening 2 games and this is something the demons will be mindful of. I expect this game to be very close. Peel have a solid block of AFL players available to them currently, and this could be keeping them around the mark in games. And that is enough to cause some problems. Perth will see this as a massive game and they will fully realise the problems Peel have caused them over the years. I will stick with Perth to go 3-1 and perhaps move further up the ladder on Saturday night depending on other results..... PERTH TO WIN BY 22 POINTS

WEST PERTH vs EAST PERTH @ Arena Joondalup - Saturday

The mother of all games for the munchers and us... West Perth have started like a bull out of a gate much like last season. Having said that they have been seriously challenged in every game so far, and come up winners. They certainly have a fighting spirit and now have the confidence knowing they are never out of a contest. The Falcons look to have moved LeCras into defence which is suprising considering how dangerous he has been up forward. He appears to have suffered a bit of the yips in set shots and that maybe has messed with his confidence up forward. But the munchers do have a few players capable of snagging goals when they are needed. Salecic is one of those. East Perth need to get something going and one of their best wins last year was when they were almost at rock bottom and facing West Perth at Joondalup. They came out and kicked 24.9 to 19.10 and started a chain of vital wins. This game you feel could be as decisive if they can find something special. Still not sure what is happening with the Pettifer report or whether he will be available. Last week East Perth had a huge advantage in the ruck winning the taps 59-18 over the tigers. But they need to have their rovers taking advantage of this, which they didnt do last week. Having said that Swan was brilliant around the middle and got the ball out with real vigour... However everytime Ive tipped EP they have lost. When I tip them to win they lose. I am relying on some reverse theory this week. But it will be a great game, as most derbies are.
..... WEST PERTH TO WIN BY 13 POINTS

SUBIACO vs CLAREMONT @ Medibank Stadium Leederville - Saturday.

A real tough ask for Subiaco who are just travelling at the moment. They have been great in their opening games as far as being competitive goes. It will be interesting to see how Chris Waterman goes managing Jack Anthony. He will be up against a very stringent tigers backline, and he has not set the world on fire in the WAFL just yet. Jessie Laurie is a good reader of the play and he seems to keep his feet which is a sign of a good defender. Broadhurst is still the Lions best forward option. I rate him as a real good forward when he is on song, and Subi need to get the ball in super fast if they are going to cause an upset. That is not as easy as it seems against a team like Claremont, who are well drilled for such an onslaught. EP tried a similar approach last week and Claremont were ready for it. When things started to break down for the Royals with that approach, it herded them into making errors. It can play into Claremonts hands. To make matters more difficult for Subi could be the inclusion of Chad Jones at full forward. He could possibly go around another week in the ressies, but he got through OK last week. Brett Jones was dominant last week across half back and to highlight Claremonts depth, Luke Blackwell was well held but still bobbed up with 20 possessions at the end of they day. And stopping Mitchell and Browne will be another hard task. Rix will get his hands on the ball in the ruck, being possibly the best ruckman in the WAFL. He needs Cockie, Hildebrandt and Keevers to really stand up and make his hard work pay off. A big ask for Subi, but never say never..... CLAREMONT TO WIN BY 37 POINTS.

SWAN DISTRICTS vs SOUTH FREMANTLE @ Steel Blue Oval Bassendean - Saturday.

You get the feeling this is the last chance for Swans. They too have been in positions to win in almost every game they have played this year. The concern is their last quarters which could either be fitness or just a mental weakness. They have a chance to get something right this week and will be hoping their boisterous fans can get them home. Souths have been a bit hard to gauge and what Souths team will show up on Saturday ?? Really the Bulldogs should be 3-0 leading into this game, but now find themselves facing a 2-2 ratio and being in the middle of the pack. Souths win over Peel last week I rate highly. Peel will be no pushovers and Souths did enough to leave with the 4 points. Callum Wilson steps up when Murphy doesnt, which is a huge plus for the bullies. Wilsons 6 goals last week shows he can be a real problem for other sides on his day. Swans are getting good service from Roach and Roberts. I think Robinson must improve his disposal. I have seen him a few times and he is a good footballer. But he can be so much more productive if he hits his targets a bit better. Adam Hunter was known as the swingman at West Coast. If Swans find themselves in a tight last quarter again, he could be used to the same effect as that pinch hitter up forward. But it is not like Swans lack forwards. They probably have more of them than Claremont do, but are not getting the results. Swans will be mindful of not responding by making knee jerk reactions. However a 0-3 start is not acceptable and I just feel they will be ready to click at some point. It will be a willing game at Basso on Saturday, along with the possible inclusion of Hams in a black & white jumper against his old teamates.... SWAN DISTRICTS TO WIN BY 6 POINTS.

__________________________________________________ ____________

Another big and difficult round to tip. It never seems to be as straight forward as it was 5 years ago.... East Fremantle have the bye and will try to regroup for the Anzac Day Derby at Fremantle Oval next Monday. They will be desperate to find some cohesion and repeat the brilliant win they had at the Port last year. Would be wise for Malaxos to get every player down to Bassendean Oval on Saturday and watch the Bulldogs.

SD - by 2 points - last chance for SD as u say Gas & if this was at Freo reckon the result would different...too much on the line for SD here...
Expect a couple of surprise SF selections this week, don’t be surprised to see as many as 6 changes from last week, with Haselby, T Adams & Bossong all a possibility to line-up... ps: Expect Hams to cop a battering on & off the field

CL - by 75 points - this could get real ugly for Subi

Perth - by 3 points - Peel has been Perths nemesis over recent years & reckon the home ground advantage will just get them over the line, with a Perth goal after the siren!

WP - by 5 points - Another close one here & could go either way, but WP has the form so get my tip...

Souths will not want to spend too much time & energy worrying about Hams SFFC4ever... If they do it could back fire on them. Dimmer will be expressing that to the Souths boys I am sure. Winning is the best revenge.

Hey Bensti, going back many many many years (1981) Claremont were again a massively dominant force. They had so many 30 goal days and smashed many sides. They only lost 2 games for the whole year.

One of those games they lost was to Subi (22.21 to 18.15).... It was one big upset and it was early in the year too.

Who knows, maybe a repeat some 30 years later !!

Yeah true. I remember being at that game. Neil Taylor had a day out, sidestepping opponents at will. He was a much underrated player but one of the best we have had.

Don't think anyone managed 4 winners last week, even the rnd 3 champ catfish could only tip 2 winners. This week is not much easier but i will tip a couple of teams who's backs are against the wall.

Perth
East Perth
CL
Swans

This should be a fiesty round of football with clubs matched against each other with players that have switched camps.

At Arena Joondalup Hutchings will line up for WP against his former club EP while Josh Smith will do likewise for EP against WP.

At Brownes Stadium the Thorntons (3) will line up against Perth with 2 of them being former Demons and Brendon Jones will have to face the music after giving it to Perth supporters and members last year after a come from behind win.

At Steel Blue Kyle Hams will line up for the black ducks against the side he won a couple of premierships with. There will be a fair bit of feeling there i reckon as there will be in all 3 games above.

No doubt but expect Haselby to cop the same against EF.

Claremont should win comfortably v Subi.

Got a feeling WP will beat EP - Prior a big loss for EP.

Swans playing for their season just about to can't see them dropping this one at home.

Perth are looking good and should beat Peel.

Subi's best bet, opposed to last year, is that Broadhurst doesnt have as much attention now that Anthony is there, and maybe Hughes?
