Funerals for Buddhists

I know this is abit of a morbid subject to discuss, but I'm wondering, what kind of funeral to buddhists have?Is it burial or cremation? And does it matter? What about the funeral service?Where would that be held?

hi Jacaranda,

traditionally, Buddhists in south Asia conduct cremation. i have attended some myself, where the corpse is placed on a pile of wood

however, i would speculate this is related to climatic conditions rather than to any spiritual significance

a corpse must be disposed of. in south Asia, there are many trees for fire wood. where as, in the Middle East, there is little wood, so corpses are buried

however, in Christianity, there is often the view both the body & soul will be ressurrected, thus they bury the body, as an expression of love for the "whole person"

imo

kind regards

Hi Jacaranda,

From my experience Buddhist funerals have been cremations. Its possible to arrange for a service with chanting by Buddhist monks and/or nuns, by contacting ones nearest monastery or Buddhist centre.

Kind wishes

Aloka

Although, if you from the UK, you wont get cremated outside of a crematorium as the old pyre funerals are illegal, imo, it is outrageous to prevent someone following the beliefs of their religion, I dont understand, Muslims are a foreign religion like Buddhism is a foreign religion to the uk and yet the one we are ot at war with is prevented from folowing tradition...it appears causing violence and suffering is the only way to have freedom of speech and acting.

It does not anger me or frustrate, more it confuses me, who makes the rules and maybe they should become more open minded.
