Is it possible to be an American and Buddhist at the same time?
First off, I am reluctant to call myself a Buddhist ( even though the teachings mean so much to me ). I do not want to misrepresent the Buddha or serve as a distraction from that potential that is welling up inside all living things. Secondly, I want to express equality and work towards equanimity. If I call myself this or that does it distract from what I feel my only purpose is in this life. Which is to work with people from all walks of life to bring about the end of suffering.
I know I am getting ahead of myself. I just have started reading the teachings. Nonetheless, I get so excited when there are opportunities to talk about how much I have been shown so far! I mean there is a comprehensible method to the end of all suffering. Which brings me to my real question. When I look at these teachings and want to incorporate them into my life I find the spectacle looking at me and mocking and laughing. i.e Brittany Spears it seems we just use these people up then toss them out like garbage. It is very hard to reconcile these things. Do I really just need to become a passive observer? Do I head out amongst this in between state and wait to to be of service?
