Your pali sutta source

What source do you use to glimpse into the pali suttas in pali? I use http://www.metta.lk/tipitaka/

but the problem is, it is very difficult to track with the English translations. I am wondering if there is some source which provides a paragraph in pali followed by its English translation, one para after the other; you know what I mean? That way it will be easier to track the translations without being an expert in pali

Thx

The Pali is going to be a constant, Deshy. The Pali at metta.lk tends to have well-indexed paragraphs, and if you lay the translation that is there side-by-side with the Pali, you can learn to follow it. Find as many translations as you can of any particular sutta you want to study.

Thanks for the link. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/hands.gif

What do you need to do to display the Pali pages properly? I get stuff like "Evaü me sutaü" instead of "Evam me sutam". I downloaded and installed the fonts as they say, but that did not make any difference.

After you unzipped did you go into control panel > fonts and click on the font? Are you viewing it in Western encoding?

Thanks Stuka. I was wondering if there is a method easier than keeping it side by side ...

Problem seems to be that the site provides only sinhala fonts. I'm also having some trouble viewing the pali correctly

Thanks for answering. I have tried several different encodings, all that seemed possibilities, without success. The fonts are all present in Control Panel Fonts, but the ones available for downloading from that site all seem to be for Sinhala, not for the romanised letters used to display Pali.

*Stop Press*

The problem was occurring in Google Chrome. I tried Internet Explorer and the text is displayed correctly.

I use firefox. Tried it in IE but it still doesn't look quite right. Something like this:

lol

It's readable but something doesn't seem fine. Any help pls?

If you have, for example, Nanamoli's translation of the MN, it has the PTS page numbers in brackets throughout. These correspond to the bracketed notations [PTS Page xxx] on the metta.lk Pali pages. The PTS pages are not long and this should narrow you down to a couple of paragraphs per page.

I use Firefox too Deshy and it works. The problem for me was not going to Control Panel > Fonts and double-clicking on the font. Once I did that it displayed correctly. I didn't think it was anything but Sinhala script either but it did contain the romanized characters. The font name in the font folder is "Tipitaka.....". Maybe also try clearing your cookies and such if you still have an issue.

I actually double clicked the font "tipitaka_Sinhala" which is the only font that has been installed. Let me post a screenshot of the way the pali is showing on my screen. It is certainly readable so maybe I am just over reacting.

The [PTS Page xxx] is showing in the pali one but there is no relationship with that and the English translation

Not on the metta.lk page, but I am referring to the hard-copy translation (Middle-Length discourses of the Buddha, Nanamoli/Bodhi)

Thanks Stuka :) I bet there is something wrong with my fonts. Do you know how to post an image pls? I can post a screenshot here

Immerymopay 07-23-2010 12:55 AM

Hi Deshy,

To post an image, go to the reply box (or 'preview' in 'quick reply')

Above the box are 2 rows.... in the bottom one the second button on the left is for images press that and you get 2 [img] boxes in your post. Put your image URL in between the 2 [img] boxes.

Is that what you meant?
