I remember reading something about this a long time ago and the gist of it was as follows. It was generally thought that it was a term for sexually extroverted individuals. Not necessarily gay or straight - more the manner of behaviour, if I remember rightly. They were considered unable to follow the rules on celibacy due to their 'urges' I guess.

There is a certain amount of latent homophobia in some sections of Buddhism but I don't see how anyone with the slightest knowledge of Buddhism can justify it. Attraction is the problem, not the object of attraction. It's like saying that it's okay to want a vanilla ice cream but not okay to want a chocolate one. It's all the same thing at the end of the day.
