Blow Away (For Bill) & Moments Of Pleasure
Both song about death. Both have lists of the dead featured in them. So, let's compare.
It struck me as I listened to Blow Away yesterday that although it's about someone in the crew dying tragically there's a lot more emotion in Moments Of Pleasure as the older Kate has more experiences of friend and loved ones passing away. |
Well, Blow Away lists the names of famous people, like Minnie Riperton, Keith Moon, Buddy Holly, Sandy Denny, Marc Bolan, Sid Vicious. Moments of Pleasure lists the people in Kate's life that she's lost. So that right there makes me more fond of the latter song. I think Blow Away is almost fun in a quirky way - I love the whistling and the sounds of the doors opening and closing. But like ebby says MoP captures more genuine emotion. Capturing emotion is what Kate does best.

I had no idea Minnie Riperton was the Minnie of Blow Away. That's so cool. Lovin' You is such a guilty pleasure. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/sla.gif

I hear she was the inspiration for Kate's Minnie Mouse voice. (just kidding)

I used to be in the "Moments of Pleasure is a bit too sentimental for me" camp, but now I think it's so elegant and beautiful. I think Kate's list of names in it is heartfelt and entirely appropriate.
I always loved Blow Away too. That opening piano is lovely. |
Both songs are highlights from their respective albums. "Moments of Pleasure" is the kind of song that you write off at first, then you associate it with something in your own life and it hits really hard.
