JN's set was the last event of the weekend, starting 10:30 pm on Sunday. The other outdoor stage and the nearby big top had no acts performing, obviously because their noise leakage would ruin the sound of a woman on solo harp. She was, to judge by the program notes, the organisers' primary artist. Many - perhaps most - of the EOTR attendance had little interest in JN, and there was some resentment about her apparent preferential treatment, perpetuating unfounded rumours that JN had demanded that there be no other acts performing at the same time. I have some sympathy for the non-fans and their lack of alternative entertainment, but I don't believe it was Joanna's demands, but simply to do with sound.
We got to the stage at 9pm as Midlake's crowd departed. Midlake's set saw the only rain of the festival weekend, and the forecast was for heavy rain at 10pm! We were leaning against the barrier - on the preferred right hand side of course! 90 minutes chatting to other ardent fans passed by painlessly. During this time the woman tuning the harp played for a little while, helping to pass our time. She enjoyed getting our applause. The rain stayed away, it was dark and a little cool when JN appeared at 10:30 prompt. It was her first solo gig over a year, she said. Here's the set list. Bridges and Balloons In California Easy (Piano) Cosmia On a Good Day Have One On Me Soft as Chalk (Piano) Sadie Sawdust and Diamonds '81 ---- Book of Right On That's a pretty good 'best of' list , particularly with the inclusion of Sadie. I'm not sure Joanna was in great form musically (without a band she is prone to improvise and fiddle around) but she was her usual chatty and charming self. Perhaps the forum member I met would post a photo here, as my phone pics are lousy! |
Nice set! Hope videos surface

Sadie!! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../loveicon2.gif I'm so jealous!

I'll post some photos tomorrow. I didn't get any video of Joanna as my camera would have been right in someone's face for a whole song which I didn't want to do.
Great to meet you baroquepopfan and a fun coincidence that we happened to be stood next to each other and UNF came up in conversation. Thanks for posting the setlist! I've got a bunch of videos of other bands at the festival which I'm slowly adding to my youtube channel. Joanna's performance was mesmerizing. It was the first time I'd seen her and I was anticipating greatness and was still blown away. She was the highlight of a very strong festival. Keep an eye on the Lykki Li thread for setlist and photos of another performance from my EotR top five. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif |
Oh my god, I want to hear a bootleg of this! HOOM and In California solo (interested to know how those sound), and Sadie!
|
Yeah, I hope a boot surfaces too. I'll keep an eye on dime. I've been thinking of getting one of those digital recorder things for recording gigs and festivals. Would be fun! And nice to be able to give something back to the taper communities.

Beanstew, thanks for the photos, taken over my shoulder! My phone camera can't seem to get a good night-time/flash picture. Maybe it's my ineptitude. |
Great photos!
Here is "Bridges and Balloons" |
And '81!
I hope that means he's uploading more. |

"The Book of Right-On" |
Cosmia, too!
Is it me, or does her vocal seem more "old school" Joanna? It sounds a little rough around the edges, which I personally love. I love that she gets kind of gravelly and throaty. |
Joanna at End of The Road Festival (England) 4th Sept
Just a flying visit, this one, as she seems liable to do. (She must like flying!)
And I guess mine is a flying visit too (Inverness to Bristol), which must count me as a fan, although the festival has plenty of other good acts to justify the journey. I wish she'd sing Sadie. It used to be a big live fan favourite but never gets performed now. M Ward is also there, so maybe he might do it! I'll post a set list when I get home. Really hoping to hear some new songs. Anyone else going? |
And Sadie!:
Soft As Chalk: |
Holy shit, Sadie made me cry a little. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../loveicon2.gif What a lovely performance.
|
What beautiful performances! Especially Sadie and Cosmia. I'm hoping a good quality boot surfaces.
