Default Which Wuthering?
They both have their strengths, but which version of Wuthering Heights do you listen to the most often?

The original. I don't like the new vocal version.

New Vocal sounds better! The production is more timeless, her voice is flawless, everything is slightly improved from the original version. New Vocal is also the first version I ever heard of the song. The '78version sounds a bit shabbier to me. Now, stone me!

I know she goes off-key near the end of the original, but it's my favorite anyway.

The original is an iconic example of early, young Kate, but the Whole Story version is a much better song IMO. I love the ending!! It was also one of the first songs I heard of KB, so maybe that's my bias.

The new version is technically superior and probably more accessible, but for me, it can't touch the raw passionn and beauty of the original. The version on TWS sounds like a professional singer going through the motions; the version on TKI sounds like Cathy begging Heathcliffe to let her in.

I don't care for professional singers; on the other hand, I'll fall in love with any vocalist who's true to the song, no matter how hysterical or off-key they might get.

The original, easily. It single-handedly made me a fan. Had I heard the new version, I'm not sure I would have been nearly as bewitched.

oh the new vocal, hands down. "the whole story" was the only album my parents had of hers, so i grew up listening to it. when i finally started searching out her other stuff i was pretty shocked to hear the original. the vocals are so much softer in the second version, I just love it...

I prefer the new vocals but I don't like how they couldn't find the actual instrumental tracks and had to shoddily remove the original vocals out of the mix. It just sounds washed out in the band.

Is that what they did?!?! I assumed it was just an ill-advised remix. Too much echo and "space," imo. I guess it's a bit more forgivable if it's just due to technical problems.

Original without a doubt. For better or worse it's still the de facto KB song. If the new version was the first, I doubt it had had that much impact, the singing is too conventional.

^ totally agree with this, and with gaffa's point - her unique vocal was what drew attention to the weird little song that became a huge hit. The "new vocal" version sounds like a Kate Bush tribute act cover version

I like the New Vocal version better. I never enjoyed Wuthering Heights until I heard the new version, because Kate's squeaky vocals always put me off. The newer one makes it easier to appreciate the brilliant melody, as well.

I suspect that my dedication to the old version stems from the fact that my English teacher played the song for us in tenth grade when we were studying the novel, and that was the hook. The later polished version (I call it the "this is what I really meant" version) doesn't have the same visceral appeal.

I'm glad that they both have plenty of admirers. I go through phases but the ghostly teenage youthfullness and sheer originality of the original wins out. I do really love the vocal growls and howls at the end of the 80s version.
