Ok so I didn't name this thread "Show your Ipod Bling Here" because there are a lot more portable audio units than just Apple Ipods.
But let me admit something to you all. I fetishise my portable audio device. It has taken me through learning for exams, sad and happy moments of my life, losing and gaining pounds, walking the streets of various cities in the world, many international flights, and but for the sound emanating from the connected headphones, otherwise quieter moments in my life. I have developed an emotional attachment to my portable audio device and I do use it almost every day. While some units are more "bling" to the ear (and eye) than others, each have their owns strengths and peculiarities. Some people are still content to use cassettes (dont laugh - analogue quality is still king), compact discs; others use MP3 players and flash memory units. What portable audio device do you use? Post a pic! We want to see them, worn in or brand spanking new! Tell the WNY members what you have it loaded with, which artists, audiobooks, podcasts, or even recordings that you have made. I for one wish I could carry my turntable around in my pocket, just for the sound. But alas, that cant happen. Who's going to be first? |

That turntable device is fantastic!
Ok so Ill throw my hat into the ring because I am seriously passionate about my music machine and use it every day. I couldn't bear to leave home without it sometimes. It's a format that's very popular in Japan, not an Ipod killer in popularity in the US or Europe. But if sound is your thing, it is most definately an Ipod Killer. You can use it to record concerts, operas, interviews, you name it with the same quality as a CD (PCM) or DAT. It's also used by a lot of guerilla film makers as a poor mans DAT. I have to say that I am in love with this medium and will never purchase an MP3 player while I can still use Hi-MD to give me portable CD quality. Here it is. I have the flagship model but all Hi-MD units are fantastic. http://www.japan-direct.com/images/MZ-NH1.jpg The unit is only slightly larger than the disc itself. "Disc?" I hear you say with amazement.. what next? Wax cylinders? http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/...PlayerDisc.jpg I love these discs - they are 1,000,000 x recordable and impossible to break. You can put up to 45 hours on them (compressed but near CD quality) and if you want professional/CD quality they store 90 minutes. The discs are about 5 dollars, hold 1 gig each and you can swap them with friends, or archive them, or transfer recorded materials on them to your PC, or from your PC to the disc, just like MP3s. The battery is removable and rechargeable and you can buy it readily, no problems when it dies (as one day it will). The great thing is that with a simple microphone my card-deck sized audio player becomes a professional level recording device. I love it. Usually I have 1 disc loaded and carry 1 or 2 discs in my bag depending on how long Im going to be away. Each disc has opera, jazz, some language lessons, and some popular music and film soundtracks. Hows your Japanese? The page shows you how Hi-MD works. http://www.sony.jp/support/pa_common..._md_index.html Now guys, come on, there must be some more Ipod/audio device fetishists out there. Show us, tell us. |

Lofter I couldn't see that picture.
But here's a hastily penned picture of Edward and his camera, together with my Sony Minidisc and a disc (with some Magyarul lessons, TATU, Jazz, Opera and some podcasts on it). Im going to use this baby today to record some material for a podcast. God I love this format - CD quality 44100 Hz 16 bit recording in the palm of your hand baby! I wish they made LP records that small. Analogue over digital anyday for me. But Minidisc is the next best thing. |

You can get a Sharp boombox that has an LP player. It came in red or silver and could play both sides of the LP without having to flip the LP (picture shown).
Whats your bling though? heres a great site. http://www.retrothing.com/hifi_audio/index.html |

Well, my Minidisc recorder/player died the other day. Parental neglect, I have dropped it more times that I would care to admit.
So the very next day I bought a new one. Even better. BLING BLING Comes in Silver or Black. I bought the Black unit this time. This baby can record LINEAR PCM - thats CD quality like a professional studio - and its only 100 grams! THIS BABY HAS 90+ minutes of CD quality audio recording on each $5.00 1 GB disc, the discs weigh virtually nothing - great for the Met Opera, the short movie you are making, the jazz performers in the park, your garage band, or just about anything else. Unbelievably, the unit has a balanced pre-amp for a mic, thats what professional recording units in music studios have. Or for listening to your CD or LP collection or MP3s etc, you can compress them and transfer up to 45 hours per disc, or for near-CD quality (but a lot better than standard MP3) you can record up to about 8 hours. I know I should get an Ipod like everyone else, but really, these Minidiscs are super cool. Anyone else use them? They are very popular in Japan, also in Europe - probably not so much in NY (where everyone I see uses the equipment made by the WhitePodCartel). More bling please guys - show it! |

Urban myth(s) ^^^
To be fair: Reports of iPods increasing any incidence of lightning striking human beings have been knocked down by experts ... However, the degree of severity can be increased due to the conductivity of metal and it's proximity to the human body when struck by lightning -- but this is true for any number of items, not just iPods. |
