Default Are we learning anything in school?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJuNgBkloFE

I always wince at these things....... but......... I meet so many people who would be likely stars in this video...... [no] [no] [no]

Are there European equivalents of this? Or are Americans just the most obvious targets?

Edit: answered my own question! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONCrE4IoSsY&NR=1

I guess we are just a silly species in general!!

Wow, those people are just dumb. I can't believe how stupid they are. I mean good god. I'm glad i'm still forcing myself to learn things even out of school. I'll be the first to say though that the school system in this country is screwed up big time.

True, they do this for all the late night talk shows. Interview 100's of people just to get 4 or 5 to show on tv.

Speaking of schools. Here in Australia they plan to make it compulsory to go to year 12 (A full 12 years of school from the age of 6 to the age of 18 with compulsory subjects to be English, Maths and History.

I can't say I agree with this as I know a LOT of people who dropped out in year 10 and lead successful lives far better then a lot who went right through to year 12.

Just looked at the link, it's pretty old, like several years old I think.

I don't know many countries but I sure as hell do know the big ones. Australia isn't small so how can you not know where it is

Yeah those videos you have to treat with a grain of salt. If anyone watched Sam Newman's street walk on the footy show you'd think everyone in Australia was a retard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GoWoHsyldc

While sometimes the common knowledge of your average American about the outside world might not be up there with some other countries...

Well which country has been to the moon and back?

I don't think you can call a nation that has made so many ground breaking achievements that has benefited the entire world, stupid.

Short answer no because the school system pretty much sucks (you need to want to learn to learn anything) and most teachers I have talked to are pretty much "if you know it, you will learn it..f*** u if you don't get it.

Anyway, I was thinking about this the other day and how little we need to know to survive/exist so it's not strange at all (at least how I see it).

While that is true, some of the questions were fairly simple questions. For example "how many sides are on a triangle". Tri mean 3. There is your answer.

I remember a test in elementary school: One of the questions was "What year was the war of 1812 fought in?"

I remember snickering and looking over at the teacher and thinking what the!? I assumed it had to be a joke.

Later, after scoring the test, the teacher revealed that most of the class had gotten the question wrong.......! [oops]

Obviously I have never forgotten that, because at first I thought the teacher was just teasing us............

People love that question, but it's really a stupid question because while the war started in 1812, it went on into 1815.

Why not ask "How long did the war of 1812 in last?" or something :P

It's just like asking:

"Where is Egypt?" and then failing everyone who answers "African continent" instead of "Earth"

On an average day at work I encounter at least 2 people who are mind numbingly, unbelievably stupid I find it a miracle they're able to breathe and walk upright.
