how to ask this question

Is there any possible way to confirm this without committing a massive faux pas?

No. Just forget about it.

Eh, lots of smart people have eccentricities/etc.

What if she's not?

RobertLS 02-19-2009 09:06 AM

Yeah, that's it. A girl certainly isn't worth your time if she's offended that you think she's autistic...

gooseCile 02-19-2009 09:09 AM

Don't listen to them! Give in to your curiosity and lack of social etiquette.

Almost everyone who has recently read about autism suddenly diagnoses someone they know as autistic. You might be right, but not being a medical professional likely means you aren't.

In addition, the social aspects of autism and the current countercultural silliness that surrounds it means that it should probably be left alone by laypeople. It really is just speculation.

For someone who has a background in science, I thought you would not have fallen for the epidemic of amateur medical diagnosis. It's one thing to suspect it in yourself, but probably unethical to conduct an amateur diagnosis of another person.
Oh, I know there's a high probability it's bullshit.

rXpX 02-19-2009 09:40 AM

That, and I'm bored.

We'll try better next time.

There's a difference between telling someone they have a distinctive gait, and telling them that they have a limp, especially a woman.

she consistently "creatively" misinterprets what people say, usually to hilarious effect.
Can we have some examples?

Oh for God's sake. There are a bunch of people who would like to be considered high functioning autistics who aren't. It's the same crap as people who pretend they are bisexual and aren't.

Any mental disease that has apparently cool or positive aspects to it along with exclusivity is subject to people wanting or pretending to have it. It's the worst kind of trendy health stupidity.

This is nothing more than the equivalent of emo kids who pretend they suffer from depression because they want to make themselves seem more interesting to others.
so wait: bisexuality is a mental illness?

Smabeabumjess 02-19-2009 03:23 PM

Well, speaking as a confirmed, diagnosed Aspie, I know you shouldn't ask my opinion, because I'm a confirmed, diagnosed Aspie, and phrasing things tactfully is most definitely not one of my talents. It'd be like asking the Pope how to get laid.

But I wouldn't bother. It's possible (though autism is more rare in females), but if she's gone this long undiagnosed going longer won't trouble her much. My GF is probably one too, and her mom, a special-ed teacher, had her suspicions, but she decided as long as her daughter was doing fine there was no need to burden her with the label.

Plus a lot of people would get offended, because they're stupid and don't realize we're a superior race. That's just how inferior you lot are.

I've got kids in my practice who have Asperger's. Ask yoursellf this, can you spend ten minutes with her without desperately wishing you were somewhere else? If not, she's probably not Asperger's.
Sounds like half of Poly.

The Correct way to ask is "Will you marry me" which is clearly superior to the Phrase "Do you want to marry me".

I already apologized for my less than clear remark, but I don't feel the need to Minitruth my remarks and make other posts look irrelevant.
