Default Nail biting
I have been biting my nails for close to 22 years (I'm 31 now) and I have no idea how to stop. It's absolutely the worst habit I've ever had. Not only do I bite my nails, but also the skin around my fingertips. Now my fingers look bad and feel bad. I bite without consciously thinking about it. I usually do it when I'm anxious about something or bored. It sucks!

Pure willpower does not work for me. Neither do the nasty-tasting creams I've tried.

Anyone else have this problem? Has anyone kicked the habit? If so, HOW? I'm starting to think that only shock therapy or a lobotomy will work.

I've thought about wearing gloves, but that would be socially awkward.....

I bite my nails... I've always bitten my nails that I can remember. I also bite them down to stumps..
I've stopped for a about a year and half before, but that nagging feeling to bite is always there, so i just went ahead and carried on. Too much effort to stop biting at this point. It's a constant battle that I'm not prepared to wage. I'm lazy[yawn].

seems you are better off to smoke and quit, it'll defiately get your attention away from nailbiting!

Wow, you stopped for a year and a half?? That's impressive. The longest I've ever stopped for was about a week LOL!

I'll stick to nail biting, thanks. It's cheaper.

That was quite a few years ago. When you're broke and in high school and your grandmother offers you money to stop biting your nails for a year, you do it.

Do others around you notice that your a nail biter? I too used to bite them whenever I could, but managed to tell myself to stop because several people around me would comment on how bad my fingernails looked. Not the easiest way, but certainly gave me my reason to stop.

Yeah, people have noticed. My wife doesn't like it but tolerates it. I've also had co-workers mention it. I'm actually very good at discreetly biting my nails, I never do it when someone's talking to me.

Even the social pressure isn't enough to make me stop. I'm desperate for some way to stop. It's not easy to stop a 20+ year habit.

Maybe I have to bite the bullet (no pun intended) and wear gloves until I no longer have the urge.....

I hated the fact that I would still go to bite my nails and I would have to say to myself wtf are you doing, stop it [rofl]
The fact you do it without thinking is when you know you have a problem.

I tried chewing my nails, however nails just don't feel right to chew on. I guess it's just too bad you like it.

Perhaps try to chew pens?

You could always try something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-Di...f=pd_sbs_hpc_4

There are a lot of different brands.

Best cure is to change your job to something like "Toilet attendant" or "Sewage worker", Its almost guaranteed that within a few hours of starting your new job your nail biting days will be over.

*( Might be a good idea to get checked out for Hepatitis if your nail biting continues even after this though). [rofl]

I know where my hands have been...never developed a nail biting habit .

Seriously, though, try the gloves. It will be awkward for awhile, but it sounds like that's the only way you're going to break the habit.

GAWD, does nobody read my replies? My solution would be a heck of a lot more effective and discreet than gloves.[cursing]

I did.

My daughter has the habit and it really bothers us. We got her to stop for a while when she was younger, but she's older now and still doing it. I never see her doing it, but you can tell by looking at her nails that she is, and of course by not having to clip her nails something is up.

Anyways I think we'll give your suggested product a shot.

While I haven't tried this particular brand of cream, I have tried them before with no luck. Maybe I'll try this anyway. Actually, I'm gonna order it up right now Problem is, all the positive reviews regarding this product are about these people's kids, not adults.

What's weird is that you'd think I'd get all kinds of germs and be sick more often by biting my nails so much. It's just the opposite, I'm never sick!

Yeah, I read it. He said he tried creams before though with no success so I just ignored it.
