Some juicy anecdotes about sci-fi author Samuel Delany
By Delany's estimate, he would have sex with as many as 10 or 15 men in the course of a normal day, while still logging a full day's work at the typewriter. Now THAT'S science fiction! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/eek.gif

Samuel R. Delaney, one of my favorite writers. He kind of disappeared from sight after Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand. In fact, Stars in My Pocket... was supposed to be part one of a dyptych, the second book of which, very frustratingly, remains unfinished (or at least unpublished).
His masterpiece is considered by many to be Dhalgren (a very challenging read, very broad in scope and frustratingly non-linear). Many times, it was rumored that his sex addiction was the reason he stopped writing much fiction. There were all kinds of scurrilous rumors (even that he had died in an S&M session). In fact, he had just dropped off the sci-fi map, choosing to write other things (lit-crit and such) and eventually, going to academia. Babel-17 is an excellent choice for a first read. Triton is a personal favorite. Driftglass is an outstanding short story collection (my first Delaney IIRC). I haven't read him in over a decade, but in my memory, he's a freaking genius. |
Not my style of reading, whether sci-fi or not.
