Default Older Music
At the risk of this being a bit blog-like, is anybody else here hooked on older music? I'm talking about music that's older than your interest in music. I'm 25, but find myself listening to a lot of music from the 80's. Mostly British too. Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, The Police (these guys broke up when I was what.. 3? I was certainly one of the youngest in the crowd when I saw them earlier this year), older stuff by U2. Even further back are the likes of Pink Floyd, even some ELO.

I do get into some modern music, but a lot of its just seems like rubbish. Is anyone else with me?

Well, don't think of it as older music. Think of it as good music. They have been making good music for hundreds of years. Why should you feel odd about listening to something as new as from the '80s?

I listen to the Ramones, Clash, Beach Boys, **** Dale and older composers. It's about what you like.

If you want to see how varied my tastes are... look here.

Yeah I'm with you. 80's music was the BEST. The early 90's stuff was great too, but it all went downhill after about 1996 (when the Spice Girls appeared).

I can't listen to much nowadays without frowning with disgust.

Edit: I'm 26 BTW.

I hated a lot of the music from the 80's as it just seemed so cheesy, overblown and overplayed, in the same way a lot of modern crap is now I suppose. Over the years I've come to appreciate and listen to it quite often.

A heck of a lot of good stuff in the sixties and seventies - even going back into the twenties and thirties - but then I also like Jazz and Blues [thumbup]

I like old music, but, I like new music too. I don't see how you can have a problem finding new good music like some of you say.

Yes, there is a lot of crap, but, there is also a lot of very good music being made now. Since people have easier access to recording, it's a good and bad thing.

Chocolate Rain anyone? I mean, come on. Instant classic.

Sure there's good new music...and I listen to quite some new stuff as well.
But it's just (IMO) that there's less really good music in the 21th century (or even 90s maybe?)..so usually i'll just end up listening to older music again.

I mean look at hardstyle. Several friends of mine listen to hardstyle at home (not at parties) They like it..To me, hardstyle (and metal, etc.) don't even fit in the category "music".
Even most hiphop songs don't fit in "my" music category.

Most new music just lacks good melody and/or rhythm

Older stuff from the 70-80's is great.

Got a bunch of old vinyl here and it sounds superb, Dire Straits, Hendrix, Bowie, all original pressings and all sound great, allot more musical than the remastered to death cd equivalents.

I'm 20 and I listen to mostly pre-90's music. "Classic" rock is the best.

I don't much care for most of the stuff out now, with some exceptions. I don't care for hip-hop, r&b and rap much either.

I agree, I find a lot of the stuff that has been coming out in the past few years is crap and is getting worse[cursing]. I mostly listen to Classic rock and rap/hip-hop but over the past while rap is starting to die for me. My music taste for newer music has shifted to this type, I can't really classify it so I will give you some examples

How can you say you can't stand 60s music? It's such a massive range you can't possibly say you don't like any of it

Phil Collins.. oh dear.

You could pretty much say that of any 5 year span. Mostly you think of the older music as better because you forget about the crappiest parts of the past, and only the good ones stand out.
