MySpace agrees to block sexual predators

I mean could there be a kinkier sounding term than "sexual predator".
|
As I suspected, no where does the article ever mention blocking or banning sexual predators (or pedophiles or molesters, etc) it just lists several measures taken to restrict and block teens.
Maybe we should fight rape by requiring women to wear burkas. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/rolleyes.gif |
Winston: I think they're trying to imply that they aren't going to just randomly ban 'sex offenders' but instead try to prevent the actual sexual predation. That's a http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif in my book, i'm never a fan of dual punishment (ie, punishing someone who's served his/her time further).
Ozzy: The idea is to keep kids safe, not to restrict them. Making their defaults private does not harm them but protects 'newbie' users who don't know to change it. Making an area where only highschoolers are protects them from adults coming in, which is generally something highschoolers want anyway from my memory of that time... and it doesn't indicate that they're *restricted* from the adult sections, just the other way around. I don't see anything remotely negative to youth here... it could have been a LOT worse, but they took the high road as far as I'm concerned. |

That's the idea behind the burka too. But the idea and the reality are often two different things. I do agree that making the default private isn't a bad idea. I'm a bit cautious about the high school section it might be a step towards splitting MySpace into two sections for under and over 18 year olds. |
The fact remains that more kids have been killed by their parents in the last two weeks than ALL the cases of murdered youth blamed on MySpace. The hysteria is absolutely misplaced.
