On the Philippine Islands before Philip was born? Can anyone say the Lancer Islands?

I have enough trade goods within 50 ft to be a rich man here back then, but my wife isn't home so that would be a bummer. There's a housekeeper home and two little girls that would come along, they might be better off back then but the housekeeper would lose her husband.

Basicly a bummer. Also, I only have maybe 6 months meds with me, after that I'm dead.

I'd have enough books to glean a basic understanding of metalurgy, gunpowder, and teach it to the people, advancing them 2 scis.

Nah BC, not these people. I'd also spread Christianity to the islands. Can anyone say Saint Lancer?

Seriously though the natives would be friendly having had no bad experiences with whites before and any item made of metal would be exceedingly valuable to them, given enough time you could adapt to their way of life and do the whole Connecticut Yankee / Dances with Wolves thing in grand style. The seminoles were a group who violently opposed europeans and Americans longer then almost any other native group.

I think you may be right though, I certainly hope they would recieve me positivley. Thinking more on it, I do have a *LOT* of metal near me, there is a hell of a lot of scrap metal in those washing and drying machines. I do have some half decent tools , I could proboably win them over with gifts and become the local medicine man. I suppose I would claim to be a traveler from a distant land who was very lost, what else am I going to say? A first aid course and a decent education including biology and science makes me a more competant healer then anyone on the continent.

I’d convert the Seminoles to Judaism if possible. I know absolutely nothing about Seminole religion so I don’t know if that is possible. I think I might be able to pull it off.

Cortez's conquest of Mexico would have been impossible if not for the legend of quetzocoataxl(sp?) and but for the sacking of Tenochticlan(sp again), the more advanced cities in Mexico would not have collapsed. Nothing I could possibly do about Europeans colonizing the Caribbean though.

My ancestors are split between Jews in the ottoman empire who are probably doing allright and Jews who would be soon oppressed in Spain when the inquisition comes(1481). I have no particular desire to see Europeans colonize the western hemisphere, to be honest at the time, I would probably want to prevent it-would I want my children and their descendants to be wiped out in a century or two?

I think I’d like to stop the western destruction of the natives of the Americas if possible. I do not know how to do this though, I would not speak the languages of central America nor have any easy way to get there, though if I could warn them, European conquest of the Americas would be VERY seriously slowed down. How fast do you think the Americas would be conquered if there were no stories of cities filled with gold ripe for the sacking but instead, stories of savage natives who slaughtered those who came?

I warn the natives of the impending arrival of the white man. I help prepare them as much as I can and do my best to integrate into their society. Probably marry some hot injun chic.

Etchy, you're missing it. With your knowledge of history, and hopefully history books, you would be a rich teller of fortunes in the court of some king.

My computer is pluged into a battery that I could use to give computer some running time. When I arrive in 1380 I turn the computer off then find a a few indians (Chickisaws I think.) I get them to the computer and turn it on. I use paint to communicate that I am a representative of gods and that the gods will get very angry if they don't follow my commands. I then the local language as cater to all my needs. Once I learn the local language, I will translate the bible and convert them all to christians and found Christian State (lead by me) in the New World. Using my knowledge, I will teach them to make better weapons (all I really need to do is teach them to forge metals and they will have weapons better than anyone's. I'd teach them to make firearms if I knew how to make blackpowder) I would then conquer as much as Americas as possible.

I have some stuff that would be valuable if I was in europe, paintings and such. However, I'd be out in the middle of nowhere, about 5 kms from the nearest native village in the middle of winter.

Food, nothing that would be of use in those times. No water, but that wouldn't be a problem. I have a whole box of 50 steel pins that would be very valuable here. I'd have to take it along with my very strange clothes and trade to get stuff that I could use, seeing as I wouldn't have anything that I could cook back then.

A few small tools, but nothing handy. Screwdrivers but no screws to fasten things. Funny the thing that would be most valuable would be that box of pins.

No electric, that hot tub wouldn't be so hot and the DVDs would be frizbees. No car? No matter, no gas. Toilets don't flush, and that food better be canned.

Oh yeah, and I've got a wikipedia db dump from a project I was working on in June. Forgot about that, could be handy, though I don't know what I'd do with the 2 or 3 gigs of comic book and star trek articles. No pictures though.

Well, I would appear to be deep in the rain forest, with a whole bunch of computers, printers, phones and a microwave (I'm at the office). Lucky me.

My immediate concern is defending myself against angry wildlife. I'm screwed if a tiger shows up. Otherwise, I've got a pair of scissors that would work pretty well as a dagger. If the 50 feet is vertical as well as horizontal, then I should have access to some serious cutlery from the cafeteria kitchen immediately above me.

Here's the plan:

I'm about 3 miles from the fishing village of Temasek at the mouth of what's now the Singapore River; I need to walk due south for about a mile, then follow the river (luckily, I have good walking shoes in the office). I have access to 3 backpacks. I'm going to load the backpacks with as many scissors, knives, pots, pans, and pens and pads of paper as I can. The scissors, knives, pots and pans I'll use for trading. The pens and pads of paper I'll use to introduce literacy to the natives of Temasek; with any luck, that plus some rudimentary first aid knowledge will be enough to set me up as a wise man. When the sultanate of Malacca gets established just to the north a few years from now, we'll be ready to capitalize of the trading p[ossibilities.

Well, that was an amusing thought exercise; now back to work.

I have a couple surf and boogie boards within that radius. I could set up a surf shop down by the beach!

Food would be kinda scarce. There's an avocado tree, several orange trees and a lime tree that are in the 50'. Some seeds for a garden, but not a lot. Fishing would be really important.

I'd have electricity! Plenty of equipment to set up a water wheel harnessing tides flowing into/out of a lagoon, and/or wind turbines. Use the motor out of the power tools as the generators. I'm sure I could get enough juice to have some lighting (even if it's just LEDs), maybe even cooking, heating, and desalination of water.

Some form of desalination would be important I think, though there is a "river" nearby. Not sure how dependable it is though.

Supposedly the Kumeyaay Indians were very friendly, so I think it'd work out pretty well.

Rufus," try and construct a weapon, can you manufacture a sort of crude lathe?"

Not an exact quote, but can anyone guess the movie?

Actually, I didn't even think about the fact that I might get to keep people in a 50-foot range. In that case, I'm joined by a female office mate who's hobby is wilderness trekking. I feel better already.

Btw if you want to play a cool trick on the natives, try this.

Take a camcorder or digital camera. Now take a photo or video of the chief. Now show the chief the LCD and see "Look, I have trapped your soul in this cage! If it is destroyed, you will instantly die! Only I have the power to free your soul! Do as I command!"

And the chief will be all like "Wtfpwned" and do your bidding .

Or he'll just stab you in the head and enjoy his cool new toy (until it runs out of batteries).
